Job description

As Functionnal Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing ship design projects and for leading multidisciplinary teams throughout the entire process, from concept development to production. More specifically, you will:  

  • Plan all technical aspects of the programs and projects.
  • Assist in the formation of a company growth strategy.
  • Develop technical solutions supporting the company’s service portfolio.
  • Deliver all technical aspects of the project in accordance with the plan.
  • Work with the Director to determine technical resource requirements, forecast, and manage resource costs throughout the projects.
  • Ensure that all external design work is undertaken by suitably qualified and experienced teams with clearly defined scopes, culminating in agreed costs and timescales.
  • Work with the project managers to monitor and report on the technical team’s progress on all required deliverables.
  • Attend production meetings and, where needed, chair design meetings.
  • Keep track of all scope changes and ensure adherence to the change control and technical query processes, communicating them fully on all projects.
  • Take the lead in driving a culture of continuous technical improvement within the company.
  • Ensure pre-construction information and design risk assessments are completed, compliant with contract requirements and company procedures.
  • Ensure every effort is undertaken to align the design with construction teams, providing them with assistance to deliver the project.
  • Manage key stakeholders and provide technical liaison with the end-user and construction manager.
  • Be the key interface between design and project teams and strive to provide excellence in customer service.
  • Lead an installation team, manage contract requirements, and assist the sales team in the preparation of job estimates, proposals and presentations.
  • Ensure timely completion of projects, within scope, budget, and maintain overall project quality.
  • Develop schedule of values and manage monthly on-time billing.
  • Track project progress using MS Project and MS Excel worksheets; provide monthly and quarterly project progress reports using industry-accepted project management tracking metrics (written and verbal).
  • Maintain client satisfaction at acceptable levels and promptly resolve issues.
  • Monitor and proactively manage overall project risk.
  • Monitor and manage subcontractors, and subcontractor risk.
  • Manage all site instructions, change orders, puts and takes, and drive generation and collection of change orders for out-of-scope work.
  • Standardize processes.
  • Participate in estimate and risk review process prior to jobs or contracts being quoted, to ensure labour estimates are correct and that the work is achievable from a technical perspective.
  • Develop effective partnerships and manage relationships with subcontractors to ensure an adequate pool of resources is available.
  • Manage selection and oversight of subcontractors for different jobs in conjunction, where appropriate, with supply team.
  • Ensure projects are resourced properly with adequate head count and skill sets.
  • Collaborate with other managers/leaders to ensure that the most effective resources are allocated to projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in naval architecture and marine engineering, ocean engineering, or related field, with 10 years’ experience.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in commercial marine engineering industry, with technical knowledge of all stages of ship design (concept, preliminary design); experience leading design teams within an engineering design firm.
  • Experience in ship design and production organizations preferred.
  • Experience working onsite in a shipyard preferred.
  • Minimum five years’ experience developing, reviewing, and delivering technical design and production products.
  • Knowledge and experience researching and applying regulatory and classification standards, including ABS, CFR, and military and/or commercial technical standards.
  • Familiarity with other IACS classification standards desirable.
  • Knowledge of naval architecture, marine engineering, and electrical engineering fundamentals.
  • Proficiency and experience using AutoCAD.
  • Experience using Aveva model desirable.
  • Confident and clear verbal communication skills are required to successfully listen, reach out, ask questions and work with multidisciplinary teams to facilitate consensus and complete tasks.
  • Excellent organizational skills to complete multiple and sometimes complex detail-oriented projects and tasks on time.
  • Ability to learn new engineering software packages and design standards and integrate them directly into current projects.
  • Advanced experience and knowledge of MS Word and Excel.
  • Dependable, confident, action oriented, self-starter with a sense of integrity and actively contribute to building and expanding consultancy services.
  • Bilingual (French and English). Proficiency in English is required for this position, as the incumbent will be required to interact with our English-speaking clients, partners, and suppliers;
  • Successfully complete the investigation and security clearance process required by the federal government’s Contract Security Program.
