Position Overview:

Responsible for demolition; properly disposing of hazardous material such as asbestos, lead, and mould. Collects and disposes material using special suits and equipment to minimize exposure to harmful waste and general construction waste (dust, etc.).

Duties:

• Responsible for containment preparation which includes performing the following tasks: assemble scaffolding (occasionally) and seal off work area using plastic sheeting and duct tape.
• Build connecting walkway between mobile unit or portable showers and work area.
• Set-up portable air evacuation and filtration system inside work area.
• Follow all standard operating procedures (SOP) during the asbestos removal/infection control process and cleanup process.
• Place plastic sheeting and disposal bags into required containers, bags and/or trucks.
• Follow decontamination process.
• Will interact closely with peer workers and job supervisors to effectively and safely complete all asbestos removal/infection control tasks.
• Support the handling and removal of asbestos and other hazardous waste material under OH&S guidelines in addition to other provincial, federal, and local regulations.
• Complete specific projects, assignments and other tasks as assigned.
• Out of town travel may be required.

Basic Qualifications:

• Must provide a clear Certificate of Conduct.
• 1-2 years Asbestos removal and/or infection control experience preferred, not required.
• Basic knowledge and Occupational Health and Safety Act & Regulations.
• Current certificate of completion for one-day asbestos awareness training. If you do not have one, we are willing to arrange training for you.
• Current and valid respirator fit-test certificate. If you have not completed a respirator fit-test, we can arrange the certification for you.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands:

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to walk; sit; use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; kneel; climb ladders, stairs and scaffolding. Employee will use tools such as scrapers, hammers, sledge hammers, power tools, floor buffers, knives, and shovels. The employee must regularly lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 60 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to pass a respirator fit test, as well as be cleared to work around asbestos and other hazardous materials that are associated with the position.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to wear a respirator up to 9 hours per day and other PPE; potential to be regularly exposed to asbestos, and other hazardous materials; regularly exposed to indoor and/or outdoor temperature fluctuations caused by equipment and/or outside weather conditions in addition to humidity. Employee may experience vibration while working with sledge hammers and power tools. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $18.00-$24.00 per hour

Expected hours: 45 – 47.5 per week
