General Supervisor, Waste Collection Services

The Role:
Reporting to the Director, Waste Collection Services the General Supervisor contributes to the City Operations vision by performing a dual faceted role. Firstly, as a member of the Leadership Team and operating within a collective leadership accountability, the role is focused on creating the conditions for success of the strategy, priorities and direction of the section. Secondly, the General Supervisor is accountable for creating and aligning the human, social, technical and operational systems required to carry out the work of the Collection Services team which provides Waste Collection Services to the City of Edmonton.

Reporting directly to the General Supervisor are two (2) Management Supervisors and one (1) In-scope Supervisor with a total of approximately 240 staff. The Collection Unit is accountable for: Curbside Collection, Communal ( Multi-unit) collection, Recycle Depot, Big Bin, Assisted Waste, Bin Maintenance, Roll Off Bin Collection and Contract Inspection.

Goals and deliverables:

• Lead, exemplify, establish the desired culture throughout the Unit, aligned with the City’s Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies, ensuring these are translated and inherent in the unit’s leadership, culture, processes and practices
• Oversee the management of the labour, equipment , contracts required to deliver exceptional, cost effective service to Edmonton’s residents
• Maintain a high degree of organizational effectiveness, corporate culture and employee engagement
• Develop and implement continuous improvement strategies focusing on the efficiency and effectiveness of services while navigating change to produce positive outcomes
• Maintain industry leading safety results and ensuring all City and Provincial Safety standards and guidelines are implemented and in practice

• Experience in a leadership role within a large, complex, unionized organization
• Knowledge, training and/or education in Business, Engineering, Environmental Sciences or a related discipline
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered

Assets:

• Additional certification or coursework/training in financial management, public administration, change management, or other leadership training
