Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Earth Observation Specialist, the Geomatics Engineer-In-Training is accountable for ensuring the integrity, and functionality of remotely-sensed and other geospatial corporate data assets. The position is responsible for aiding in the development of technical standards and specifications related to remote sensing and geospatial data, assessing and confirming conformance of solutions and deliverables to the previously developed standards and project requirements, and participating in the effective management and correct use of the data assets, guided by the principles of geomatics engineering.
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Effective apply project management approaches to coordinate and organize complex and fast-paced projects.
  • Conduct comprehensive research and synthesize information to advance the project outcomes.
  • Uses knowledge of photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, GNSS, surveying, geodesy, and error analysis to determine potential causes for errors and possible solutions. Works with vendors and the Senior Engineer to determine solutions and appropriate resolutions.
  • Provides technical review and makes recommendations for update to the provincial geospatial data standards.
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives for challenges facing the Earth Observation team and Provincial Geospatial Centre.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of Government of Alberta standards and specifications related to remotely-sensed and geospatial data.
  • Articulate (in written, verbal, and presentation form) and tailor messages to diverse audiences, develop reports, and provide support to the policy leads.
  • Maintain an organized approach to planning, prioritizing, and coordinating assigned projects and overall workload.

Qualifications

University graduation from an Engineering or Applied Science program in Geomatics. . No experience required. Must be eligible for in-training status with APEGA or AAA.
Equivalency: Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.
Education/experience must include knowledge of the following geomatics engineering sub-disciplines:
  • Remote sensing and image analysis, including airborne and spaceborne sensors.
  • Photogrammetry.
  • Geodesy.
  • Land surveying and positioning, including associated technologies.
  • Propagation of errors, error analysis, and measurement process design.
  • Geographic Information Systems in the context of data analysis, design of data structures, and data management.
  • Principles of digital terrain modeling and associated technologies (lidar, photogrammetry, radar).

Additional Assets:
  • Attention to detail.
  • Critical thinking/nonlinear problem solving skills.
  • Time management skills.
  • Project management experience.
  • Communication with technical and non-technical audiences - written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Scripting (e.g. Python)/Task Automation experience.
  • Familiarity with principles of data management and geospatial metadata.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance of geospatial data.
  • Familiarity with web mapping and data visualization.
  • Familiarity with common and specialized (industry) software - Microsoft suite, ESRI suite, DATEM Summit Evolution, PCI Geomatics, FME etc.

This position is a full-time permanent opportunity and is located in Edmonton.
This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM-4:30 PM, 36.25 hours a week.
