About the Opportunity

Currently, Johnston Builders has an exciting opportunity for a Health, Safety & Quality Control Coordinatorto join our team in St. Albert, AB on a full-time basis. Occasional travel to the Whitehorse office, and various job sites across Alberta will be required.

This is a dual role where you will be responsible for all aspects of our health and safety compliance while assisting in the management and compliance of our internal quality standards. Additionally, you will be implementing company initiatives, training, process improvement, and auditing.

Some of your key responsibilities within this role will include:

  • Safety (75%)
    • Lead in the development, implementation, and maintenance of the company’s safety program in conjunction with all regulatory bodies
    • Make recommendations and develop plans that will contribute to a safe working environment for our employees
    • Create and implement safety plans while ensuring they are followed daily
    • Conduct regular on-site safety walks, audits, and inspections
    • Responsible for planning, scheduling, and completing of internal and external audits, consolidating audit results, writing final reports, and closing outstanding audit points
    • Conduct investigations that arise from accidents, incidents, and near misses
    • Lead and participate in Health and Safety Committee meetings
    • Manage WCB claims and return-to-work programs proactively, working closely with the employees, their manager/supervisor, and the insurance organization to ensure the employee’s safety and health and protect the company’s interests
    • Mentor, guide, teach, and coach supervisors on health and safety requirements, responsibilities, and how to fulfill them
    • Maintain Health and Safety bulletin boards
    • Arrange training for employees based on requirements and need
    • Collaborate with management to establish, monitor, and share key performance indicators and relevant statistics which can be used to identify trends
  • Quality (25%)
    • Assist management in developing and conducting quality assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) initiatives
    • Work with co-workers to create and keep up-to-date QA/QC documents
    • Make recommendations on how to improve these QA/QC guidelines
    • Conduct quality training sessions and workshops when required
    • Maintain and analyze data, and create quality dashboards for management

More About You

In order to qualify for this role, you'll need at least 3 years of experience in the construction industry (commercial, industrial, multi-family residential). Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Legislation and other regulatory requirements in a construction setting, along with HSA, NCSO, or equivalent, is required.

Additionally, the following are strong assets for this position:

  • Knowledgeable in the principles of safety and workers’ compensation along with pertinent federal, provincial/territorial, and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Experience in Health and Safety regulations/issues/committees
  • Preference for familiarity with SiteDocs and Procore
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license is required

As our ideal candidate, you have a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and an eagerness to learn. You are a motivated self-starter with high attention to detail and accuracy, along with strong analytical, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills. Advanced verbal and written communication skills, along with effective organizational and time management expertise will ensure success in this role.

Computer skills, including the ability to competently operate software including Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Office 365 are required. As such, you need to be a resourceful and confident problem-solver who can make decisions regarding our H&S and Quality Control to the highest standards.
