Job description

The Heritage Tourism Ambassador (SGE) will welcome visitors to the John R Park Homestead Conservation Area. While sharing information about local history and heritage with visitors, this position will also undertake data collection and reporting of visitor statistics in support of regional tourism. As a living historical site, this position will assist with developing content and temporary exhibits to share information about natural and human heritage for the museum. The Heritage Tourism Ambassador will assist with heritage programming and special events as well as museum gift shop sales and visitor services. Light cleaning and maintenance of the work area and facilities will be required.

This position is classified as a ‘Special Grant Employee’ as the tasks associated with this position are funded in whole or in part through Federal and Provincial agency funding sources. The period of this contract is May 13 through September 2, 2024, with possible extension(s) based on funding.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing exceptional customer service to welcome and orient visitors to the John R. Park Homestead museum and conservation area.
  • Offer reception duties and regional tourism information in the site’s Heritage Centre
  • Record and report visitor statistics (# of visitors; etc.).
  • Facilitate visitor surveys and other metrics initiatives, as coordinated by our regional tourism office (TWEPI).
  • Assist with the development and installation of 2 temporary exhibits.
  • Assist with heritage programming and special events.
  • Assist with museum gift shop sales and visitor services.
  • Perform light cleaning and maintenance of work area and visitor common areas at the site.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities consistent with the position as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Per the Young Canada Works funding program, this position is open to applicants who meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
  • have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
  • intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.
  • Candidates must be registered in the YCW online candidate inventory;
  • Note: Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in the YCWHO employment program.

Additional Qualifications

  • Demonstrated customer service skills and the ability to engage with visitors.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communications skills. Ability to provide customer service in French or another second language is considered an asset.
  • Excellent attention to detail, using checklists that are provided.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Must have transportation to location.
  • Police Record Check (Vulnerable Sector clearance)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Typically 35 hours per week with varied hours scheduled between 10am and 7:30pm to meet JRPH operating needs, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • There is no guarantee of full time hours and this position may be subject to temporary layoffs from time to time and/or alternate work schedules should business interruptions occur.
  • Hazards and Risks: Primarily working in an office environment with occasional work outdoors in high heat/humidity (some portions of the Homestead are not climate controlled); lifting (up to 25 lbs), bending, crouching, repetitive actions requiring a high level of attention to detail.
  • Environmental conditions: Primarily indoors/standard office environment. Occasionally may be required to wear 19th century period costume.
  • Job Duration: May 13 through September 2, 2024; 16 weeks x 35 hours per week; (with the possibility of extension of weekend hours into the fall 2024).
