Pay Grade H ($58,986 to $63,117 per annum)

 

 

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a school of students, faculty, thinkers and makers unlike any other. As a valued member of the team, the International Student Advisor collaborates with the supervisor who oversees international development initiatives to provide services, academic advising, and programming to support the experience and meet the needs of International Students at Emily Carr. In addition, the Advisor assists and collaborates on the creation of programs and events, develops, and facilitates presentations to provide information and processes for successful engagement in Canadian post- secondary institutions. The advisor works collaboratively with multiple departments to support engagement in all aspects of student life, empowering students to achieve their academic goals while complying with regulations of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

As the successful applicant, you should possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum two years’ experience in a similar post-secondary environment, advising diverse student populations.
  • Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) designation is required.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advising students in a post-secondary environment regarding Immigration Refugee Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requirements and other procedures for student visas and post-graduate work permits.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, student-centric environment.
  • Knowledge of a second language is considered an asset.
  • Student Centred service, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written communication and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to advise and assist new students with the transition to Emily Carr and the local community, including demonstrated awareness of intercultural issues related to student transition. 
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, email, social media and the internet.
  • Student Information System experience, Colleague preferred.

 

SomeTypicalDuties:

  • Enhance progression and retention of ECU International students and work in collaboration with the supervisor who oversees international development initiatives, students, and other relevant parties by assisting in creation, coordination and delivery of workshops, programs and activities to support ECU’s International Students.
  • Provides assistance to incoming International Students to ensure proper health care coverage and support their transition to Canada.
  • Supports International Students with navigating complex immigration policies and procedures while maintaining compliance with IRCC standards. 
  • Provides information related to study permits and other entry visa applications and refers students to Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as needed. Maintains contact with continuing students and stays current on immigration policies related to student study permits and post-graduate work permits.
  • Drive student success through providing information and resources. Research existing support service models for International Students and develops templates for Emily Carr.
  • Implements programming for International Students such as orientation, student meetings and information sessions, ensuring maximum participation.
  • Acts as the first point of contact for International Students and provides support to students via individual appointments, telephone, email, group advising and online delivery.
  • Provides system navigation and refers students to various services such as academic advising, co-op and work integrated learning, counselling wellness as well as relevant community supports.
  • Collaborates and assists in the creation of peer support network and student engagement programming.
  • Maintains International Student degree audit program evaluations in Colleague including creating catalogue updates and new programs as they are introduced, as well as course substitutions and exceptions where required.
  • Works with International Students experiencing academic difficulty by providing intentional support and discussing implications of previous academic performance and recommending specific action to improve the student’s academic experience and success.
  • Assists with other administrative and clerical support positions in the department during busy periods.
  • Assists in the completion of the IRCC International Student audit report.
