Vancouver Island University invites applications for the role, Instructor, Foundations for Success in our Faculty of Academic and Career Preparation.
The Instructor will teach Foundations for Success 102: Finding Careers that Fit: Exploring Meaningful Education and Career Paths. In Foundations courses, the focus is on a mix of content and the learning process; how to learn the material is as significant as the material itself. Foundations courses support the student in university transition and are a path to lifelong success.
The successful candidate will instruct course; integrate basic computer skills into instruction; prepare course materials; deliver individual and group instruction; provide student support; track student evaluation, grading and record keeping; liaise with student success advisor; participate as an active member of the instructional faculty.
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in relevant field from an appropriately accredited institution.
Teacher training or proven related experience in teaching adults in a course to research and develop the skills and attitudes necessary for pursuing education and career goals.
This experience is demonstrated by the equivalent of a minimum of one-year, full-time teaching experience with corroborating positive evaluations; proven experience in working with adult students in university transition; ability to use a wide range of teaching strategies to accommodate the needs of different learners; skill in providing individualized instruction in a group setting; demonstrated interpersonal skills working with students. The successful candidate will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds of VIU student populations. Familiarity with VIU's courses and programs.
Proven experience in teaching students about their individual learning styles, personality styles, aptitudes, interests, and values. Proven experience in teaching students how to conduct thorough research and make informed choices for short and long-term educational and career goals.
Demonstrated digital competencies. Demonstrated commitment to life-long learning. Demonstrated problem solving skills, organizational skills, and time management skills.
Knowledge of, and the ability to access, institutional resources. Familiarity with VIU's courses and programs. Responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds of adult upgrading student populations.
