Job Summary

The Janitor/Custodian, under the direction of the Shelter manager, will primarily be responsible for maintaining a clean and healthy working environment for all areas of the shelter facility. Practicing strong attention to detail, effective time management skills the cleaner/janitor will adhere to safe work practices at all times. Working with a vulnerable population, this role will respect and protect the rights of clients.

Job Duties

• Adhere to all appropriate workplace regulations and legislation regarding health and safety, accommodation standards, and company policies and procedures
• Protect the health and safety of others by adopting safe work practices and reporting unsafe conditions immediately
• Maintain the cleanliness and order of the facility, stocking and supplying designated facility areas (sweeping, mopping, cleaning) laundry services, showers, washrooms, and mats
• Carry out heavy cleaning tasks and special projects
• Perform regular property inspections including washrooms, common areas, building exterior each day at specified times
• Ensure commitment to quality, client and guest safety, and risk management initiatives
• Notify management of occurring deficiencies and need for repairs

Job Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent
• 2 years prior experience
• WHMIS training
• Valid first aid or CPR certification
• Clean vulnerable sector check
• Strong working knowledge of safe cleaning industry principles, methods, practices and techniques
• Ability to deal pleasantly and effectively with a wide range of people of different ages and cultures, in potentially emotionally charged situations
• Ability to maintain positive professional boundaries without imposing personal judgments and expectations
• Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing

Salary: $22.00 per hour
