As an entry-level position, and working under the direction of others, the Junior Water Monitoring Technician collects water quality samples and measurements, summarizes and reports water quality information and data in support of the activities in the Water Quality & Regulatory Assurance division (Water Quality Monitoring, Stormwater Pollution Prevention, and Industrial Monitoring groups). Primary duties include:
- Collect water quality samples (stormwater, sanitary sewer, and surface water) and field measurements using various methods and instrumentation, including water quality and flow/level/velocity.
- Operate/ calibrate water quality and flow monitoring instrumentation for the purposes of collecting samples and field measurements.
- Compile, summarize, conduct basic analysis and present water sample data in spreadsheet, database or report format.
- Attend field locations, observe site conditions, compare conditions to expectations outlined in bylaws, drawings, plans and reports and draft inspection reports.
- Perform other duties such as gathering information from other municipalities, developing information packages for industry stakeholders and supporting staff who perform hazardous activities and require a second person on-site for safety.
Qualifications
- A completed 2-year diploma in Environmental or Water Science/ Technology or a related discipline, with no experience.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits or a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is also required.
- Water sampling experience and knowledge of field sampling equipment and instrumentation would be considered an asset.
- Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work independently and on a team.
Working Conditions: Primary work in the field where subject to potentially dangerous sites (for example: when working in a river collecting samples); and work in awkward conditions such as in confined spaces.
Pre-employment Requirements
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
