What can I expect to do in this role?

Join our team as a water/wastewater professional with OCWA
In this role, you will use your skills to perform a variety of chemical/physical analysis and testing of various types of environmental samples at the Deloro Arsenic Treatment Plant and Mine Site. You will also perform test procedures, conduct quality control programs, perform maintenance of the analytical equipment, compile and validate data, complete reports, and conduct client meetings and presentations.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

  • Minimum post-secondary laboratory science Chemical technologist program, with related work experience, or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and related work experience.
  • Skills and knowledge with general laboratory and field practices, and with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometry.
  • Conducting chemical/physical analysis of water & wastewater by applying established methods/procedures, and completing quality control documentation
  • Sample preparation for general laboratory analyses, ICP-MS analysis, standards preparation, and lab clean-up
  • Conduct/direct maintenance of analytical equipment and complete software updates
  • Input, maintain, and verify information in a variety of databases and spreadsheets
  • Assist client in preparing reports
  • Knowledge and/or experience in water and wastewater treatment operations and maintenance is considered an asset
  • OIT, WQA, or other water/wastewater licenses are considered an asset
  • Must complete a health assessment upon hire by Sanofi Pasteur Limited's Occupational Health Centre (OHC), including but not limited to immunization status, potential work-related exposures to infectious materials and toxins, immunocompetency, antibody titre levels, and any other potential health hazards (e.g. noise exposure, potential allergens).


Knowledge

  • Knowledge to collect and perform analysis of the water and wastewater process samples, and provide the results to operations staff so they may make process adjustments
  • Knowledge of general laboratory best practices and procedures in order to conduct the day-to-day running of the laboratory (e.g. calibrate and maintain the lab equipment, utilize standard methods of analysis, create standard solutions and dilutions, and control the lab inventory)
  • Ability to complete process data sheets for samples, and control parameter results, or complete sample submissions to outside labs
  • Observe details and maintain accurate records of experiments and results
  • Knowledge of laboratory and field QA/QC practices and data validation methods
  • Responsible for the proper storage of materials and the appropriate disposal of waste in the lab
  • Ability to read an interpret Permits, Acts, Regulations and other Legislation as required
  • Good knowledge and understanding is required to apply, interpret, implement and maintain programs based on legislated requirements and various internal operational processes.
  • Excellent written skills with an ability to prepare written technical letters, reports, procedures that will include photos, charts and graphs.
  • Excellent knowledge of computers, operating programs and systems.

Skills and Ability include

  • Problem solving skills; to conduct tests, evaluate data, and verify results, by selecting from a variety of established procedures, standards and techniques (e.g. evaluating results against defined quality control criteria, complete QA/QC measures for data validation, etc.)
  • Analyzing skills to conduct analyses/monitor/control the processes of water and wastewater treatment facilities; determining recommended process or chemical adjustment
  • Strong communication skills are required to report process conditions and site updates to management, operations, and clients; Ability to liaise with MECP, representatives from outside labs, chemical and equipment suppliers, operators and compliance personnel etc.
  • Position requires attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to handle multiple responsibilities, while prioritizing and coordinating daily tasks
  • Troubleshooting skills to maintain laboratory operations and day to day functions of equipment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and knowledge of database functions and maintenance programs.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, and independently.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize and take initiative.
  • Strong attention to detail

The Ontario Clean Water Agency is an agency of the Province of Ontario, reporting to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
