LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION TECHNICIAN’S

LEVELS 1 & 2

JOB DESCRIPTION

Kalagan Outdoor Design is currently looking to fill all positions for our crews. These positions are to support our skilled trades in the construction of landscape projects; from artificial turf and putting greens to retaining walls and paver patios. Candidates should have a desire to work outdoors in a fast paced team atmosphere as well as possess an eye for detail and take pride in their work.

Laborer positions are physically demanding, although we do our best to capitalize on our equipment and work efficiently. Construction labor experience of any kind is an asset, but is not necessary. Kalagan Outdoor Design utilizes the unique concept that we expect our employees to train themselves, as well as the hands-on training provided in the field. We offer courses, certifications as well as seminars and a vast training platform that gives our employees the ability to develop their own skills, grow their knowledge and create a career in the landscape industry.

Daily tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Excavation crew: site excavation, sub-base preparation, rock wall construction, trucking, machine mobilization, water feature construction.
  • Hardscape crew: base preparation, block wall & paving stone installation.
  • Softscaping & finishing crew: landscape lighting installation, irrigation system installation, planting, ground coverage installation (rock/mulch/soil/etc.), artificial turf/putting green installation, privacy panel construction and installation, painting/staining.
  • Hauling materials with wheelbarrows and by hand.
  • Lifting heavy objects and materials.
  • Raking and shoveling aggregates.
  • Job site cleanup.
  • Assisting in the installation of water features, irrigation systems, fences, artificial turf and many other landscape features.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR LEVEL 1 & 2

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a skilled and versatile Landscape Construction Equipment Operator who possesses the ability to operate heavy machinery and is also willing to work hands-on in ground-level construction tasks. In this role, you will be responsible for efficiently operating a variety of construction equipment, such as excavators, and skid steers, to support Landscape Construction projects. Additionally, you will be expected to actively engage in on-the-ground activities, collaborating with the construction team to ensure the successful implementation of project plans.

Daily tasks will include but are not limited to:

Oversight and Delegation

  • Maintain a small ground crew to assist with the excavation and site preparations before and during general construction.
  • This requires accountability and responsibility for the safety, efficiency and training of these employees.
  • Reporting
  • Complete daily reports on all sites/projects under their supervision
  • Detailed reports of all site incidents, safety concerns, and employee infractions.

Training and Onboarding

  • Assist in the training of new and existing employees
  • Review our SOP’s as well as our company culture and expectations
  • Lead by example, ensuring that all employees are given the opportunity to participate in job site discussions, as well as ask questions openly.
  • Ensure that no employee is forced to perform a task that is exceedingly outside of their comfort zone and level of knowledge.

Continuous Growth and Learning

  • All employees must be open to learning new ways of doing things and be able to adapt to changes in our procedures.
  • All employees are expected to participate in the creation of our SOP’s and voice any concerns or questions they may have during and following their implementation.

TEAM LEAD JOB DESCRIPTION

A team leader leads, monitors, and supervises a group of employees to achieve goals that contribute to the growth of the organization. Team leaders motivate and inspire their team by creating an environment that promotes positive communication, encourages bonding of team members, and demonstrates flexibility.

Daily tasks will include but are not limited to:

Project Construction Management

  • Working in unison with the project foreman to plan, prepare and execute landscape projects.
  • Ensure that all the materials, tools and equipment needed for the job are on site or have been requested from the foreman.
  • Ensure that you are communicating with the foreman what your staffing requirements are, and that these requirements are adjusted as needed.
  • Oversee all aspects of the projects execution including but not limited to the following:
  • Site commencement and scope review
  • Addressing all safety concerns
  • Site preparations
  • Site hazard mitigation
  • Installation of the project
  • Site completion, clean-up, remediation, and any necessary restoration
  • Reporting
  • Complete daily reports on all sites/projects under their supervision
  • Detailed reports of all site incidents, safety concerns, and employee infractions.

LANDSCAPE CONSTRUCTION FOREMAN

Kalagan Outdoor Design is currently looking to fill all positions for our crews. These positions are to support our skilled trades in the construction of landscape projects; from artificial turf and putting greens to retaining walls and paver patios. Candidates should have a desire to work outdoors in a fast paced team atmosphere as well as possess an eye for detail and take pride in their work.

The Landscape Construction Foreman is responsible for leading and coordinating the on-site construction team to ensure the successful implementation of landscape projects. This role involves hands-on work, supervision, and effective communication with project managers, clients, and team members.

Daily tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee multiple worksites
  • Divide your time efficiently in order to be on the sites that need your immediate supervision.
  • This does not mean intervening with the scope of work taking place on site at any given time. This refers to ensuring that the team on site has the tools, materials and knowledge to perform the task(s) at hand.
  • Delegate labor to sites as needed.
  • We want to ensure that there is as much congruence as possible and labor is not bouncing needlessly from site to site. However there are times, generally at the beginning or the end of projects where labor can be reassigned to other sites.
  • Leads will be delegated by either Robb or myself.
  • Review job scopes prior to jobs commencing.
  • Making suggestions as to asset and crew allocation as well as any deficiencies in the design.
  • Considering safety measures as they pertain to the project.
  • Assist in creating efficiency in the workflow. This may include:
  • Truck deliveries
  • Equipment rentals
  • Material deliveries/receiving
  • Equipment sharing between crews
  • Labor allocation
  • Oversee Quality Control of all projects
  • Ensure that the processes on site on in line with our SOP’s
  • Ensure that the quality of work being completed is up to the standards of Kalagan Outdoor Design
  • Ensure that the management team is aware of all necessary changes that may need to occur prior to them occurring.
  • Communicate change orders to the sales team
  • Carefully document all change orders that are requested by the client. These must be sold and approved by the sales team prior to their implementation.
  • Checklists/Audits
  • Daily toolbox talk submitted daily
  • Project commencement checklist submitted at the end of the first day of each project
  • Project completion checklist submitted at the completion of every project
  • Completing truck audits
  • Completing site audits
  • Receipt tracking and Returns
  • Ensure that receipts are collected on a daily basis and put into their designated folder no later than the following morning
  • Ensure that excess materials are accounted for and returned.
  • Project Reporting
  • Ensure that leads are sending their project reports and photos daily.

SHOP ATTENDANT JOB DESCRIPTION

The role of the shop attendant is to ensure the efficiency of the crews working on sites. It is the shop attendants goal to maximize the crews time on sites, and to minimize their time at the yard. The shop attendant is integral in promoting efficiency, by using positive, modern means of communication, and by being extremely organized and forward thinking.

Daily tasks will include but are not limited to:

Maintenance

  • Small equipment repairs and maintenance
  • Tool repairs/servicing
  • Heavy equipment preventative maintenance
  • Vehicle preventative maintenance
  • Complete a maintenance log and submit all logs weekly for all maintenance

Materials/Tools

  • Receiving deliveries
  • Keeping inventory up to date and accurate
  • Ensure all tools and materials are stored safely, and to avoid damage
  • Tool and material returns as needed

Deliveries/Order Pickups

  • Make deliveries as needed
  • Pick up material orders as approved by project management

Ordering

  • Submit weekly requisition forms for consumables, project materials etc.

Fuel/Propane

  • Ensure all jerry cans and propane bottles, and mixed fuel are filled as needed and available to the crews
  • All empty jerry cans at the shop should be filled daily, and available the following morning

Order Picking

  • Ensure that all materials are picked and readily available for the crews as needed.
  • Ensure that trailers are loaded with the materials needed PRIOR to the crews arriving at the shop.
  • All trailer loads should be strapped and ready to depart the yard PRIOR to the crews arriving at the yard.

Snow Removal

  • Plow the yard as needed, including the front of the shop (Ed’s side)
  • Shovel any entry ways, and apply salt as needed
  • Use a blower to remove snow from the materials in the yard upon each snowfall

Staining/Painting

  • Stain and paint fence boards, posts, etc. at the shop within given timelines
  • Perform staining/painting touch up and applications on site as required.

Safety Equipment/Materials

  • Inspect all first aid kits upon job completion and rotate as needed
  • Inspect all fire extinguishers and punch tags monthly
  • Ensure fire extinguishers are requisitioned to be recharged as needed

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure water jugs are filled for the crews and ice is readily available
  • General yard/shop cleanliness
