We are looking for a Lumber and Building Materials (LBM) Counter Sales Associate to join our team in a full-time, permanent capacity. If you are a motivated individual that has building experience and/or knowledge we want to hear from you! Our ideal candidate has retail sales experience, a friendly and outgoing demeanor, and has good computer skills.

The LBM (Lumber and Building Materials) Counter Sales Associate is responsible for providing prompt and friendly service to customers, both contractors and homeowners), advising them on appropriate merchandise and related items. They must be familiar with lumber and building material products, pricing, local building codes, types of building permits issued, and be able to prepare quotations for large building projects. The LBM Sales Associate’s primary responsibilities are to process regular and special orders for LBM products and maintain appropriate LBM inventory levels.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Customer Service

  • Ensure customers are promptly greeted when they arrive at the LBM counter.
  • Determine customers’ needs by asking open-ended questions.
  • Communicate product knowledge to the customer as appropriate.
  • Help customers solve building problems and suggest appropriate solutions.
  • Resolve customer complaints.
  • Help with loading customer orders as needed, or when lumber yard is short-staffed.

Generating Sales

  • Prepare quotes for large building projects.
  • When filling orders, consider add-on sales when possible.
  • Develop and maintain sales call reference files and prospect lists.
  • Establish and adhere to a regular schedule for calling on accounts.

Processing Transactions

  • Process special orders for non-stock or out of stock items.
  • Collect deposits for special orders from third-party suppliers.
  • Process special orders from third-party suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain delivery/pick up schedules for large orders.
  • Process in-person payments for charge accounts.

LBM Inventory Maintenance

  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels for LBM products stored in the coverall building, garage, and lumber yard by regularly checking stock and ordering product as needed.
  • Assist with receiving and restocking LBM materials.
  • Regularly check inventory levels and notify management of any ongoing shortages or ordering challenges.
  • Regularly inspect lumber to minimize waste and proactively suggest uses or for damaged products.

Product Knowledge

  • Be familiar with current yard inventory and surplus items.
  • Keep up to date on practical knowledge of building materials and lumber products, including their uses, advantages, and disadvantages.
  • Be familiar with and maintain up-to-date information on pricing.
  • Be familiar with local building codes and types of building permits issued.
  • Be familiar with prices, practices, and policies of the company’s competitors.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School graduation or equivalent.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Knowledge of various lumber and building materials is required.
  • Friendly and helpful attitude toward customers is required.
  • Excellent communication skills are required.
  • Good mathematical skills are required.
  • Good computer skills are required, including writing professional emails, preparing electronic documents like sales quotes, and electronically ordering product from various suppliers.
  • Forklift and bobcat experience an asset.
  • Retail experience is an asset.
  • Willingness to learn and continually develop professional skills and knowledge base.
  • Ability to work co-operatively in a team atmosphere.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds frequently to load and unload customer orders.
  • Move and handle boxes of merchandise and fixtures throughout the store.
  • Must be able to climb a ladder to restock product.
  • Must be able to comfortably stand for an extended period of time.

SCHEDULING: This is a full-time, 40hr/week position that can run either Mon-Fri or Tues-Sat. Shifts are typically 7am-3:30pm but some seasonal variability (e.g. 8am-4:30pm) may occur during winter months.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: From $20.00 per hour
