The teachers and educators served by the Low Incidence Technology Coach teach and support students who are on alternative or modified curriculum with learning profiles associated with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, physical disabilities, communication disorders, sensory disorders and/or multiple exceptionalities.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-school technology coaching to assist teachers in the creation of interactive digital learning resources for their students with complex learning needs.
  • Support students in accessing their curriculum or program through the effective and independent use of their technology.
  • Lead groups of educators through software workshops and professional learning communities (PLCs).
  • Follow LEARNstyle’s training process which is steeped in instructional strategies and pedagogical practices while controlling the pace, fluidity and effectiveness of training sessions according to the assistive technology learning needs of the teacher and their students.
  • Prepare for training sessions as needed and document details of training sessions through our company software (Teacher Management Tracking System or TMTS) and other digital management systems.
  • Attend weekly low incidence virtual team meetings. This is an additional LI team meeting while continuing to participate in the weekly High Incidence regional team meeting.
  • Undergo professional development, both independently as well as through our staff PD and certification courses.
  • Have the ability to maintain at least 1 day of HI coaching and accommodate to a schedule that is flexible in the ratio of LI: HI coaching days as determined by board claim demands.

Required Skill Sets:

  • Able to connect with and train a diverse range of adult and student learners.
  • Have advanced design and build skills with digital slide deck tools (e.g. Google Slides, PowerPoint).
  • Experience and knowledge of the learning profile needs for a diverse student population with special learning needs associated with intellectual disabilities, communication disorders, physical disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, sensory disorders and multiple-exceptionalities.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the following technologies: Clicker 6, Clicker 8, Boardmaker, SMART Notebook, Windows and iOS operating system accessibility settings, Read&Write, G-Suite.
  • Strong ability to learn and train on additional education technologies if presented by the board.
  • Strong observational and listening skills.
  • Strong assessment, task breakdown and problem-solving skills help teachers progress students with learning goals through the application and integration of education technology.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, clearly and diplomatically.
  • Dynamic group/workshop presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with alternative curriculum and programming in the elementary and secondary learning environment.
  • Must be reliable and able to self-motivate. This role involves working independently with minimal direct supervision and requires a commitment to self-directed learning with the educational technologies listed above and as the products evolve.

Required Qualifications:

  • The means to reliable travel from school to school throughout York Region. Approximate borders are south end of Lake Simcoe, Hwy 27, Steeles, Hwy 30/York Durham Line.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Education, Assistive Technology, Communication Disorders, Occupational Therapy, Disability Studies, Rehabilitation, ABA or other related fields of study.
  • An asset qualification for those with Education degrees: additional special education training, courses, and/or certifications.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working with individuals who have intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, communication disorders, and/or multiple exceptionalities.
  • School board experience preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of computers and assistive technology across platforms (e.g. Microsoft tools, Apple products, Google Workspace and Education, etc.)
  • Strong Demonstrate proficiency in working with Clicker 6, Clicker 8, Boardmaker 7, Boardmaker Studio, and SMART Notebook.
  • Complete a technology challenge based on a Microsoft or Google tool in addition to either a Clicker, Boardmaker, or SMART Notebook challenge.
  • The ability to leverage computer, assistive technology, and education technology tools and features to meet the learning profile needs of a student population with diverse diagnoses and developmental needs.
  • The ability to coach and transfer the above mentioned technology application knowledge and skills to teachers serving the above mentioned student populations.
  • Adult education and formal group presentation experience.
  • Must pass a Vulnerable Sector Screening police check.
