Manager, Category Portfolio

What you'll do

BC Hydro’s Supply Chain function is integral to keeping the business running and the lights on. BC Hydro has transformed
its Supply Chain model through the implementation of a full category management capability to better meet the business’
requirements for quality, safety and reliability in what we buy for the best total cost and to ensure mutually beneficial
supplier relationships. The Operations & Enterprise Supply Chain group is accountable to develop and implement strategies
for the key categories that account for over 80% of BC Hydro’s annual $2 billion expenditures. Our job is to give BC Hydro
confidence that it is getting the best overall value from its overall spend and managing risk. Due to a retirement, we now
have an opening for a Category Portfolio Manager (CPM) for the Technology Portfolio.
CPMs are part of the leadership team for the Operations & Enterprise (O&E) Supply Chain group and report to the Director.
The role leads the organization in taking a strategic long-term perspective on the management of their portfolio to achieve
all business category objectives and help meet BC Hydro’s mandate. CPMs are accountable for a portfolio of categories
that have ~$400-500M in annual spend and lead teams of Category Leads and other professionals both directly and in a
matrix environment. The CPM provides recommendations to senior business leaders and executives on supply chain and
business strategy, risk, and issue management. It is vital that this role provide novel solutions to business problems and be
able to provide expert advice, mentoring and leadership across BC Hydro, the relevant industry and their respective teams
and supplier management. The ideal candidate must bring a balance of business savvy and strategic orientation to lead a
team and organization forward while using solid practical planning and execution skills to get the job done. They must be
able to hold true to the long-term vision of what we are doing, take a pragmatic approach in achieving it and create full
engagement with their teams, suppliers, and business groups.
This specific CPM position will be managing the Technology portfolio which includes all Information Technology and
Operational Technology hardware, software and related services used across BC Hydro. Ideally, we are looking for
candidates with experience in these types of categories, and the associated suppliers and internal business groups and can
manage the end-to-end Category Management activities, leveraging strategic relationships with internal stakeholders and
suppliers.
Our ideal candidate will have a growth mindset, be able to stay calm in pressure situations and be able to effectively teach
and coach to ensure team and organizational alignment to the Category Management practice. They must be solution
focused, motivated by delivery of results, and the success of their Portfolio and overall Department teams and creating
sustainable change to benefit the company. The successful candidate will have the ability and judgement to adapt their
leadership style to engage the team, organization, and suppliers to get things done and achieve the plan.
High Level Outcomes:
1. Deliver Results: Lead the Portfolio team, business groups and external stakeholders / suppliers through the successful
execution of Category Management for their Category Portfolios that results in achievement of business objectives and
ensures BCH is supported to achieve its overall mandate.
2. Build Team: Develop high performing professionals and teams that have a reputation for being trusted partners across
the organization and are relied upon to deliver results for BCH.
3. Build Credibility: Ensure people have confidence in Category Management at BC Hydro at all levels including leadership,
peers, team members and employees that rely upon suppliers to advance their work.
4. Build Reputation: Build and advance reputation of BCH with Suppliers, industry peers and other subject matter experts.

What you bring

Education
  • University degree Bachelor’s (MBA or Master’s preferred).

Experience
  • Minimum of 12+ years related business experience at a senior level in a large organization or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a people leader in progressively more responsible roles.
  • Experience working in a dynamic, evolving business environment, with success bringing clarity and systematic solutions.
  • Experience working in a business environment that is complex, with multiple stakeholders and
strategic considerations.
  • Previous involvement leading and balancing multiple high complexity / risk / impact projects/ initiatives / strategies and
implementing innovative, broad scope solutions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and results in implementing multi-step, structured Category Management approach or other
similar structured business process that includes: assessment, strategy development, implementation and monitoring of
results in a business environment.
  • Experience with supply chain related accountabilities and functions such as sourcing, supplier management or contract
management.
  • Experience building and leading high performing teams – in situations with direct reporting and matrixed team members.

understand how the Category Management practice can address those needs. Apply sound judgement and pragmatic

accomplishment of specific objectives that support business outcomes and achieves results. Able to ensure strategic plan
and work plans including resources, schedules, project timelines and budgets support business outcomes and achieve
business results.
