Enterprise Data - Manager


Reporting to the Director, you will help mature our data-driven culture by ensuring quality fit for purpose data assets are developed and maintained within a cost-conscious and optimized manner.


You will lead a team of talented data professionals tasked with the ownership, expansion, and evolution of the Western data warehouse. You will develop and implement new data solutions and data governance strategies, policies and/or processes and will be able to effectively collaborate and manage data projects with other departments within Western.


Here is what a typical day looks like


Strategy and design

  • Own and drive the data warehouse roadmap (on premises or cloud based) including maintaining and building out the logical data models, improving the data governance practice, ensuring high quality and availability of data.
  • Evaluate the overall cost of database solutions, products, and services – looking to provide best-in-class delivery at lowest possible cost.

Stakeholder management

  • Collaborate with the Technology Services team to define and implement data architecture and design, adapting and scaling to reflect the needs of the organization.
  • Manage the coordination and prioritization of complex data projects and act as a functional liaison between Business Intelligence and Analytics team, Technology Services teams, and business stakeholders.

People leader

  • Responsible for leading a team of data professionals to deliver on accurate and timely data engineering and database solutions.
  • Communicate the strategy to the team and ensures that the team is aligned to the long-term goals of the organization and will be responsible to effectively manage the team’s workflow for projects, changes, and incident resolution.
  • Be responsible for team performance management, staff development, couching, and providing technical guidance and leadership to the team.

  • This role requires a strategic thinker with a proven ability to execute on complex data projects, a passion for leading and the drive to continuously improve and evolve the company's data strategy.
  • Bachelor's degree in information science, data management, computer science, business administration, or a related field.
  • Proven experience developing data strategy, managing data governance policies and procedures, maintaining, and improving data warehousing, database administration and data architecture design.
  • Experience managing a team, and successfully coaching and developing team members.
  • Deep coding expertise in Microsoft SQL, IBM DataStage and Microsoft Azure is strongly preferred.
  • Experience of shifting data warehouse from on-premises to cloud will be considered an asset.
  • Data management within the P&C Insurance industry experience is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Able to understand the impact of decisions on other disciplines.
  • Strong project management mindset.
  • Experience influencing senior level management and key stakeholders.

Hours: Full Time – 37.5 hours/week
