The Opportunity

Medical laboratory technologists provide lab services for diagnostic purposes and to support clinical care, as well as, academic and research needs. This is the second MLT level for the Anatomical Pathology (AP) division. In addition to MLTI activities, the role of the MLTIIs is to organize and directly facilitate the daily operations within the department and to effectively communicate and collaborate to ensure the most effective, efficient, and highest quality of care with other IWK departments. MLTIIs also ensure Laboratory services are managed/assessed with the patient’s and family needs as a priority. The MLTII acts as a resource and leader for staff in their area of certification, (Medical Laboratory Technologist I and Medical Laboratory Assistants) exhibits leadership, advanced technical knowledge and sound professional judgement and initiative.

Reporting to the Manager, Microbiology and Anatomical Pathology, the AP MLT II performs a variety of anatomical pathology services under the direction of the Pathologists and Charge Pathologists’ Assistant. They work in conjunction with the Manager to implement and conduct the quality assurance program for the service within the IWK under the supervision of the Division Head, provide additional resource and equipment management, and oversee scheduling and daily operational guidance. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Histology (embedding, sectioning and staining)
  • Dissection, gross examination, and processing of surgical and autopsy tissues
  • Operation of Instrumentation, e.g. Tissue Processor, Embedding Stations, Cover-slipper, H&E Stainer, IHC Stainer
  • Quality Control
  • Quality Review and Assurance (internal and external)
  • Resource Management
  • Compliance to various standards, e.g. Canadian Biosafety Standards, Accreditation Canada, WHMIS, OHS

Hours of Work

75 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, occassional overtime required on holidays and weekends

Your Qualifications

  • Diploma of Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized program, or Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) required. Bachelor’s Degree in a related field may be considered.
  • Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT).
  • Licensed with the Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NSCMLT).
  • Minimum five (5) years of Anatomical Pathology experience required.
  • Experience with gross dissection, frozen section micrometry and staining an asset.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to patient and family-centered care.
  • Demonstrates and understands diversity, inclusion, and cultural competence.
  • Demonstrates the adaptability and flexibility to work in a constantly changing environment.
  • Must have excellent knowledge of divisional practice, legal acts, and regulations governing the profession.
  • Performs duties in compliance with operational and procedure policies and protocols.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates effective organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
  • Understands and has a proven ability to apply teambuilding dynamics/techniques.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in problem solving
  • Candidates must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to technical expertise and professional development.
  • Candidates must be able to work within a team, independently and to take initiative when required.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
