Job description

If you are an innovative Clinical Therapist and you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the Indigenous community, consider joining the Jordan’s Principle Mental Wellness Team serving Shibogama First Nation communities. We are seeking positive, community-minded team members who are energized by challenge and motivated to serve our communities by working with children and Youth up to 18 years of age.

Applicants must be a Registered Psychotherapist, Psychologist , Psychologist Associate or Social Worker or in the process of registration with the appropriate Ontario regulatory body, with a Master’s Degree in Counselling, Social Work or Clinical Psychology with training in Child and Youth development,

The Role

Some of the responsibilities of this position are:

  • Provide extended frequent in-person appropriate therapy to children and Youth under 18 years of age (may be counselling, psychotherapy etc, depending of need and qualifications of therapists).
  • Provide culturally appropriate direct service including client assessment and, intervention;
  • Integrate play therapy, art therapy or other creative arts therapeutic techniques as appropriate.
  • Provide quality client care that is consistent with best practice, agency standards and evidence-based approaches (particularly brief, narrative, solution focused therapies for counselling and trauma informed approaches for longer term psychotherapy);
  • Entry and maintenance of client records in EMR system and databases,
  • Completing reports and support letters as required particularly for Jordan's Principle.
  • Create and maintain cooperative working relationships with First Nation community workers. in order to make referrals and mobilize community resources for client welfare;
  • Participate in case management and referrals.
  • HYBRID MODEL Ability to travel bi-weekly leaving Monday returning Friday with a team-mate (Specialist in another discipline) then the following week support services will be provided from your home . Departure cities can be Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton or Thunder Bay.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, Clinical Psychology;
  • Current registration (or eligibility) with CRPO, membership with CCPA or CPO, OASW & OCSWSSW or other professional associations as applicable;
  • Experience working with children, youth and their families in individual settings;
  • Experience with art therapy, play therapy, traditional talk therapy or other therapeutic techniques (We Thinkers, Social Thinking as asset);
  • Experience with addressing complex needs, including trauma, grief, bullying, ADHD, self-injury, acting out behaviours, etc.;
  • Evidence of thorough knowledge of impacts of family violence, abuse, addiction, residential school and intergenerational trauma;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous people, including sound knowledge and understanding of issues impacting mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health in contemporary society (As Asset);
  • Positive, non-judgemental and inclusive towards people experiencing challenges;
  • Ability to travel bi-weekly then provide services virtually on alternate weeks
  • Successful applicants would be required to submit a clear criminal reference check for vulnerable sector.
  • Strong data collection and coding skills
  • Must stay up to date on Covid shots including the most recent one in November 2023 as an essential service provide working with a medically vulnerable population.
  • Ability to work with a close-knit team of colleagues.
  • First Nation cultural competency preferred

  • Due to medical vulnerability of client population, the First Nations have mandated that all Service Providers are up to date with recent COVID vaccines to travel there and provide in person services which is required every other week.
