ABOUT

Millbrook First Nation is a Mi'kmaq community located within the town of Truro, positioned in the hub of Nova Scotia. Millbrook First Nation also has reserve land in Beaver Dam, Sheet Harbour, Dartmouth, and Cole Harbour, along with other privately owned lands near Truro and Sheet Harbour.

Using its geographic location, Millbrook First Nation has thrived in numerous economic development endeavours within the past decade. Economic development projects include but are not limited to the construction of the Truro, Millbrook Power Centre, residential apartment buildings and a gaming centre located in Cole Harbour, and a wharf in Sheet Harbour.

THIS MOMENT, THIS POSITION

Under the direction of the Director of Health Services and working with other health centre staff , you will be responsible for enhancing Mental Health services; providing Mental Health counselling and case management; and developing a crisis response protocol in Millbrook to be implemented by the community.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Enhancing Mental Health Services:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Health Services to identify areas for improvement in Mental Health services.
  • Propose and implement strategies to enhance the overall quality and accessibility of Mental Health support within the community.

Mental Health Counselling:

  • Provide individual and group Mental Health counselling sessions to community members.
  • Tailor counselling approaches to address diverse Mental Health needs and foster overall well-being.

Case Management:

  • Conduct thorough assessments of individuals' Mental Health needs and develop personalized case management plans.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress, adjusting strategies as necessary to ensure effective support.

Community Implementation:

  • Facilitate the implementation of the crisis response protocol within the Millbrook community.
  • Provide training and support to community members involved in crisis response, ensuring readiness and effectiveness.

Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Collaborate with other health professionals, community organizations, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen Mental Health services.
  • Coordinate efforts to create a cohesive and supportive network for Mental Health within Millbrook.

Education and Awareness:

  • Conduct educational sessions on Mental Health awareness and destigmatization within the community.
  • Raise awareness about available Mental Health services and resources.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions, case management plans, and crisis response activities.
  • Prepare regular reports for the Director of Health Services on service utilization, outcomes, and areas for improvement.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Nursing, or relevant health-related discipline with demonstrated experience in the area of Mental Health and addictions.
  • Previous counselling experience.
  • Experience working with First Nations populations where individuals live with Mental Health or substance use challenges, is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills of advocacy, empowerment, support navigation, and Mental Health recovery principles.
  • Mental Health First Aid (or willingness to complete it in a timely manner)
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training considered an asset (or willingness to complete in a timely manner)
  • Computer skills – Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Zoom or MS Teams.
  • Criminal record clearance will be required.
  • Child Abuse Registry Check.
  • Valid Driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • St. John’s Ambulance/First Aid Certificate would be an asset.

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate for this position must possess a robust combination of knowledge, abilities, and key skills essential for success in the role. In terms of knowledge, they should have an in-depth understanding of Mental Wellness, Addictions, and Navigation, coupled with a holistic comprehension of human wellness. Familiarity with program design and a knowledgeable appreciation for the Millbrook community, along with a deep respect for its cultural and community traditions, are crucial. Abilities required include maintaining strict confidentiality, effective interpersonal relationships, a positive attitude, high integrity, dependability, honesty, respectfulness, cultural awareness, reliability and adaptability.

Key skills expected from the candidate encompass strong interpersonal and leadership capabilities, counseling experience, proficiency in case management, advocacy, and navigation. The candidate should also demonstrate excellence in public relations, public speaking, effective verbal and written communication, as well as facilitation of meetings and workshops. Additionally, the candidate must exhibit skills in conflict resolution, motivation, and possess strong decision-making and problem solving abilities. An ideal candidate is assertive, confident, and respectful in their approach, showcasing sound work ethics throughout their professional endeavors.

THE PACKAGE

Salary: $55,000 - $65,000 (Range negotiable based on experience)

Pension plan and Benefits

The successful candidate will be required to work from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Mon- Thur, and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Friday (Occasionally outside of these hours if the need arises).
