Job description

Job Title: Middle School Teacher at Tsay Keh Dene School in Northern BC.

Tsay Keh Dene is a remote community located in Northern BC in Rocky Mountain Trench in some of the most beautiful natural surroundings in the world. We are currently looking for talented and inspiring person to come join our team.

Job Summary : The Grade 7-8 Teacher in a BC First Nations Community is responsible for providing quality education to students in grades 7 and 8, while incorporating First Nations culture, values, and traditions into the curriculum. This position involves creating a safe and inclusive learning environment that promotes academic achievement, cultural understanding, and personal growth. The Grade 7-8 Teacher collaborates with colleagues, community members, and parents to support the holistic development of students and foster a strong connection to their First Nations heritage.

Responsibilities:

· Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that align with the BC curriculum and incorporate First Nations culture, history, and perspectives.

· Create a supportive and culturally responsive learning environment that values and respects the unique identities and experiences of First Nations students.

· Teach a range of subjects, including language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and cultural studies, using instructional strategies that cater to diverse learning styles.

· Integrate First Nations knowledge and perspectives into subject areas to enhance students' understanding and appreciation of their heritage.

· Utilize appropriate assessment methods to evaluate student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.

· Provide individualized support and guidance to students, addressing their academic, social, and emotional needs.

· Collaborate with colleagues to plan interdisciplinary activities and projects that promote cross-curricular learning and cultural understanding.

· Incorporate technology and other resources effectively to enhance teaching and learning experiences.

· Involve parents, guardians, and community members in the education process through regular communication, parent-teacher conferences, and community events.

· Foster positive relationships with students, acting as a mentor and role model while promoting self-esteem and cultural pride.

· Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and stay informed about current educational practices and First Nations cultural protocols.

· Participate in school and community events, ceremonies, and initiatives that promote cultural preservation and celebration.

· Collaborate with the school's First Nations Education Coordinator and other staff to ensure the integration of cultural activities and resources into the curriculum.

· Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, attendance, and other relevant information.

· Comply with all school policies, procedures, and regulations, including those related to health and safety.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor's degree in education or a related field. A specialization in First Nations education or Indigenous studies is an asset.

· Valid teaching certification issued by the BC Ministry of Education or in the process of applying.

· Knowledge and understanding of First Nations culture, traditions, and history, with a commitment to integrating these aspects into the curriculum.

· Familiarity with the BC curriculum and its application at the grade 6-7 level.

· Experience working in a First Nations community or with Indigenous students is preferred.

· Ability to create culturally responsive and inclusive learning environments that value and respect diversity.

· Strong instructional and classroom management skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish positive relationships with students, parents, and community members.

· Flexibility and adaptability to meet the unique needs and challenges of a First Nations community.

· Understanding of trauma-informed practices and strategies to support students' social and emotional well-being.

· Proficiency in the use of technology for instructional purposes and student assessment.

· Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and work as part of a team.

· Commitment to ongoing professional development and a willingness to learn about local First Nations culture, traditions, and protocols.

· Respect for confidentiality and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.

· First Aid certification and a valid driver's license may be required.

Benefits

· Salary: $ 60, 000 - $100,000 depending on experience and education.

· Fully subsidized housing including rent and utilities

· Retirement package 5% match

· Travel provided from point of hire to Tsay Keh Dene at start of contract, Christmas break and end of contract.

· Moving allowance up to $1000

· 3 weeks paid time off at Christmas

· 2 weeks paid time off at spring break

· Sekani Awareness Cultural Week - school closed for 1 week May for cultural participation

· Fully furnished housing (including bedding, couches, TV, dining room table and chairs, dressers, all major appliances)

· Use of school 4x4 pickup truck, snowshoes, cross country skis, and a small workout facility.
