Job description

PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the surface mining fleet to ensure equipment availability and costs are maintained in accordance with production goals.


ACCOUNTABILITY

Reporting directly to the Maintenance General Foreman, the position has direct responsibility for approximately 20 certified and uncertified trades and maintenance personnel including heavy duty mechanics, electricians, welders, crane operator, lube/service, apprentices and contract workers.


RESPONSIBILITIES & PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

In concert with the Maintenance Planner and mine operations, ensure that the planning and execution of scheduled and running repairs to equipment is conducted safely, effectively and efficiently

As required, assist in the development of a daily, weekly and rolling maintenance plan, identifying the required repair parts, material, labor, tooling, equipment, repair procedures and special and contracted services that are needed.

Identify and communicate gaps in the maintenance program and work with all levels to improve efficiency.

Provide mentorship, coaching, direction, supervision and guidance to direct reports while ensuring that performance management including the need for discipline, if necessary, is maintained on a regular basis.

Perform other related duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education

An Inter-Provincial Trades Certificate or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution is mandatory.

Experience

Several years of hands-on mechanical or electrical trades experience in a heavy industrial environment is required. Recent experience in a mining environment is preferred. Lead hand or previous supervisory experience is an asset.

  • Good understanding of mining operations including capabilities of a surface mining fleet

  • Good knowledge and ability in the use of word processing and spreadsheet applications

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and demonstrated flexibility in responding to changing priorities

  • Supervisory skills to coach, train and mentor others

  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and multi-tasking abilities


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The incumbent needs to be able to:
  • Handle loads over 20 kg. in weight

  • maintain a license to operate a vehicle requiring a Class 5 license

  • Regularly engage in physical exertion, i.e. shovel, lift and/or carry heavy materials, walking and climbing over rough and uneven terrain in all types of weather, etc.

  • concentrate for over 60 consecutive minutes

  • work in environmental extremes for over 60 consecutive minutes

  • sit for over 60 consecutive minutes

  • perceive fine visual detail

  • listen for quiet sounds

  • hear specific noises over background noises

  • use fine motor skills


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent works at the CST Canada Coal Mine Site facility on a 7day on/7 day off, 12 hour day schedule. Overtime and being on stand-by or ready for call-outs may be required due to the nature of the work. He/she regularly operates a four wheel drive pickup on mountainous terrain in all types of weather and road conditions.

The incumbent is in an office setting 25% of the time and outdoors or in a shop setting 75% of the time and may be exposed to dangerous physical hazards and loud and continuous noise levels associated with working in close proximity to large surface mining equipment. Travel may be required outside the work area in order to attend conferences, courses or meetings.

As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to comply with pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as per the Drug and Alcohol Policy. Personal protective equipment will include the use of an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, protective clothing and gloves and safety vest.
