Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey’s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Mine Maintenance department is responsible for the maintenance on all mobile equipment at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site. The department attends to a variety of surface and underground equipment including but not limited to Dozers, Excavators, Haul Trucks, Drills, Loaders, Jumbos, Bolters, LHD’s, etc. Additionally, the department is responsible for supporting the entire light vehicle fleet including Pick-Up Trucks, Semis, Forklifts, and other equipment. The Mine Maintenance department is comprised of highly skilled Heavy Duty Equipment Technicians, Automotive Technicians, Truck and Transport Technicians, Welders, and Engineers.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Mine Maintenance Supervisor to join our Mine Maintenancedepartment in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a permanent position based out of our Surface Mine Maintenance Heavy Duty Shop.

This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a two week on, two week off rotation.

Reporting to the Mine Maintenance Superintendent, the Mine Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the safe and effective supervision and planning of both surface and underground mobile equipment servicing and repair. The Mine Maintenance Supervisor will work with the Mine Maintenance Team to develop the maintenance plans and will be responsible for their execution. The Mine Maintenance Supervisor will lead a team of unionized company and contract maintenance personnel, including heavy equipment maintenance technicians, wash bay attendants, machinists, and welders. Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Lead the maintenance team in the timely and efficient upkeep of Voisey’s Bay fleet of mobile surface and underground mining equipment, prioritizing safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
  • Oversee the troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repair processes for heavy and light mining equipment strict adherence to all safety, environmental, and technical standards.
  • Provide technical support and expertise to the team, offering guidance during complex maintenance tasks and fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Cultivate a strong culture of safety by actively involving the team in safety programs and ensuring compliance with all policies and regulations.
  • Efficiently schedule and oversee a diverse team of maintenance personnel to optimize equipment availability and minimize downtime, aligning maintenance activities to support company objectives and production goals.
  • Collaborate with the planning team to maintain preventive maintenance schedules and manage repairs, ensuring equipment is kept in peak operating condition.
  • Promote effective teamwork and communication across all levels of the organization, ensuring team members possess the necessary skills and training for their roles.
  • Lead and conduct daily morning meetings to discuss priorities, safety topics, and operational updates, ensuring a cohesive and informed workforce.
  • Manage maintenance contractors, ensuring external teams meet Vale’s standards and effectively support maintenance objectives.
  • Conduct incident investigations, maintain detailed maintenance records, and support departmental improvements to boost operational efficiency, cost management, and environmental compliance.
  • Resolve, document, and escalate personnel issues as appropriate, maintaining a productive and respectful work environment.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

About You

Education:

  • College diploma in a Mechanical trade.
    • An Interprovincial Red Seal in the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician trade is required however a Red Seal in the Truck & Transport trade may be considered.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of overall experience in a mining mobile maintenance environment.
  • Experience in Heavy Duty Maintenance Supervision and in relevant heavy equipment repairs.
  • Detailed knowledge of heavy equipment and light vehicle maintenance and repair in a mining environment.
  • Knowledge of an open pit mining process is required.
  • Extensive experience with SAP.

Skills:

  • Knowledge of cost and budget processes.
  • Capable of carrying out standard procedures.
  • Knowledge of a professional discipline or related process and people issues.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Practical knowledge of Workplace Safety & Health Act.
  • Computer skills (MS Office Software, etc.).
  • Communication Skills (Oral, Written, Demonstrative).
  • Ability to effectively supervise, prioritize and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ownership of HSE risk reduction program.
