Work Hours: Must be available to work 22.5 hours/week.

The Newcomer Information Referral Specialist develops and facilitates sessions for newcomers that are relevant to their settlement process, and which encourage them to become involved within their new communities. The Specialist is responsible for overseeing community outreach, involvement, program evaluation and reporting.

In this role, you will:

  • Recruit and register newcomers; greet with a warm and welcoming approach; assist newcomers to make a smooth transition into Canada.
  • Conduct needs assessment and referral; provide members with an orientation to all services available at the YMCA; maintain members’ information.
  • Research, collect and organize settlement-related information; ensure information is relevant, accurate and up to date.
  • Develop and facilitate group information sessions; develop guest speakers’ series.
  • Conduct community outreach, building and cultivating relations.
  • Work closely with and provides support to the Senior Team in order to achieve quality, fiscal and program targets; participate in program evaluation and follow-up; maintain and submit statistical and progress reports.
  • Remain alert to immigration and newcomer trends and report these to the Newcomer Senior
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You bring:

  • University Degree or Community College Diploma on related field or equivalent training/work experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of settlement services, post-secondary education and community information resources.
  • Superior presentation, facilitation, and organization skills.
  • Proficient with personal computer applications, e.g. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and Internet search engines.
  • Flexibility regarding work hours including evenings and Saturdays and at different YMCA locations.
  • Ability to communicate in another language an asset.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging.
