Employees will be hired into an operational area: Parks Operations & Cemeteries, Integrated Pest Management, Parks Infrastructure, Water Management, Urban Forestry, or Centre Division.
 
As a Seasonal Parks Labourer, you will perform a variety of duties individually and also as a member of a crew under the direction of a crew lead, gardener, or foreman. Depending on the operational area assigned, work may include:
  • Clean and maintain parks by picking up litter and branches, emptying garbage bins, blowing, raking and bagging leaves, cleaning and stocking washrooms.
  • Cut and rake grass, as well as lay and remove sod.
  • Use self-propelled mower and weed-eater with a harness.
  • Water plants and plant trees, shrubs and annuals.
  • Maintain annual, perennial, tree and shrub beds including edging, dead-heading, mulching, pruning, fertilizing, and removing weeds.
  • Construct and/or repair fences and equipment, and dig holes and trenches.
  • Complete basic maintenance and painting.
  • Control pests and weeds using a variety of methods.
  • Perform other duties such as general clean up and operating equipment as required.
 
Qualifications 
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
  • A High school diploma or equivalent (for example: GED) will be considered an asset. 
  • Previous experience in any of the following would be considered an asset: horticulture maintenance, arboriculture (including International Society of Arboriculture qualifications), pest management (including pest management qualifications), landscaping maintenance, and/or experience working with power and hand tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated customer focus and the ability to work with and assist team members.
  • Proven safety awareness and dependability for completing all aspects of the job. 
 
Working Conditions: These positions require physically demanding work in all types of working and weather conditions. May be exposed to dust, dirt, fertilizers, and/or pesticides.
 
Pre-employment Requirements 
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit 
  • Applicants may be interviewed and hired throughout the duration of this competition.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
 
Note:These positions are anticipated to start April 29, 2024
 
Pre-employment Drug Test:An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Days of Work: Shifts vary to provide coverage for
7 day/week operations and include weekends/holidays.
