Diocese of London – Heavenly Rest Family of Catholic Cemeteries

Part Time Grounds Person

Position: Part-time Grounds Person (unionized with SEIU)

Work Location: primary location Heavenly Rest Cemetery, LaSalle, ON

Commitment: Part-time positions: no guarantee of hours (regularly less than 40 hours/week) days and times of work vary depending on business needs – must be available to work Saturdays.

Compensation: terms of employment as per the collective agreement.

Starting hourly rate: $18.65

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Supervisor of Grounds Operations, the Part-time Grounds Person works as part of the grounds crew team for the professional, timely and safe completion of burial service related tasks as well as the completion of landscaping and general grounds maintenance at any of the assigned cemeteries within the Heavenly Rest family of cemeteries.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

· Complete all required training and education and work in a manner that upholds and respects all policies, procedures, and/or legal requirements

· Locate, prepare the site and complete all interment, entombment and inurnment processes and procedures as assigned

· Undertake routine activities involving the service and maintenance of cemetery grounds, equipment and buildings

· Complete various disinterment’s as required

· Maintain interment sites as required (topping up, leveling, sodding etc.)

· Tidy and maintain trees, flowers, shrub beds, remove leaves, dead flowers, litter and debris

· Remove snow and ice from roads, walkways and other areas

· Install, restore and repair monuments, markers, foundations and accessories

· Complete all written work orders in a timely, efficient and safe

· Maintain all building and garage areas in a clean, safe and organized condition

· Work in a manner that ensures consistent adherence to all policies and procedures including those regarding safe and professional dress code, use of personal protective equipment, safety regulations and legislations as well as the safe use of equipment

· Maintain vehicles and equipment as required and immediately report and follow tag out procedures when concerns arise

· Duties requiring specialized training and licensing will be assigned to Grounds team staff with the proper qualifications

· Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor (or designate)

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

· Minimum of secondary school grade 12 diploma or Ontario accepted equivalent.

· A current and valid Ontario Class G driver’s license. A Driver’s Abstract may be requested.

· Personable, professional and capable of working cooperatively within a team environment. Must be able to communicate effectively with members of the public, management and co-workers.

· Demonstratable knowledge of landscaping, horticultural and/or cemetery grounds maintenance and equipment.

· Commitment to upholding and promoting safe, effective and efficient work practices.

· Willingness and ability to work in the outdoor elements including heat, sun, rain, wind, cold temperatures, etc.

· Ability to work discreetly and respectfully in indoor mausoleums.

· Ability to multi-task and prioritize work while maintaining positive and professional communications with both internal and external customers in a busy and emotionally charged environment.

· Previous training and/or experience in the safe operation of Z-turn mowers, line trimmers, hand pruners and/or hedge trimmers.

· Reliable and committed to attending to work as scheduled. This position will require the ability to work on Saturdays.

· A police record check as deemed suitable by the Diocese of London will be required of the successful candidate.
