Job description

As an Early Childhood Education Instructor, you will have the ability to shape and influence the ECE profession, future ECE professionals, and ultimately, generations of children through sharing your learnings and expertise. NSCECE is hiring for a part-time position available for on-line, day time (9-11 AM, AST) course delivery. If the successful candidate lives in HRM, this role has the possibility of the addition of practicum advising. Otherwise, there may be blocks of time without students while they are on practicum.

Instructor Accountabilities

Course Delivery

  • Create a positive teaching and learning environment by providing and promoting a respectful and supportive environment based upon the principles of inclusion, equity, and diversity.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies that take into account a variety of learning styles and stimulate student involvement, encourage reflection and critical thinking
  • Evaluate student achievement of learning outcomes with a variety of approaches and techniques through regular timely feedback and evaluate students’ work against college standards
  • Remain current in knowledge of the field of early childhood and in instructional delivery methodologies
  • Participate in regular faculty meetings
  • Issue course syllabus that includes course objectives, student learning outcomes, and modules for meeting those outcomes, and method of evaluation.

Student Support

  • Be accessible to students and provide timely responses to student communications
  • Provide academic support and relevant resources available outside of class to students
  • Refer students to Student Success Coordinator as required
  • Guide students to NSCECE policies and procedures when required

College/Community Relationships:

  • Represent the college to community groups, businesses, and professional associations/organizations
  • Participate in college staff development and team building opportunities

Full time Instructor position will also be responsible for advising practicum students in their field placements:

Responsible for supervising a small group of students during their practicum placements, by:

· Observing the student’s practice in the classroom setting (minimum of two site visits per practicum)

  • Providing students with feedback and support
  • Facilitating seminars for a small group of students over the course of the semester
  • Liaising with practicum sites, and keeping the lines of communication open between all parties
  • Marking each student’s portfolio submission

Required Skills / Knowledge & Experience:

A diploma inearly childhood education with at least four years of experience in a regulated childcare centre, family home day care agency, pre-primary program, or other early childhood education setting OR

A degree in early childhood education (including Child and Youth Study) with at least three years of experience in a regulated childcare centre, family home day care agency, pre-primary program, or other early childhood education setting

Must have a Teaching Adults Certificate or related certification or willingness to complete certificate. Progressive and varied experience in the field of early learning and care.

Demonstrated understanding of child development, emergent curriculum, and current issues/trends in Early Childhood Education.

Awareness of adult education principles and the role of learning outcomes, instructional approaches, and evaluation techniques to be used.

Ability to use a variety of teaching/learning strategies.

Experience teaching in the online environment is an asset.

Proficiency with basic computer programs.

Demonstrated competency in written, oral, and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated ability to develop learning materials and resources and deliver instruction for students.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to a changing environment.

Demonstrated ability to work within a team.

Demonstrated understanding of diversity/equity and inclusion to meet the needs of our diverse students, staff, and members of the college community.

Use effective interpersonal communications skills with, students, faculty, management and externals partners or community members, showing a sensitivity to intercultural communication.
