- Peer Support Worker
Reports To: Project Lead
Classification: Full Time Contract
General Description of Duties:
- The Peer Support Worker will work collaboratively within Biindigan Mental Health Addictions Wellness Department.
- The Peer Support Worker will be available by offering people support, encouragement, and hope that recovery is possible.
The Peer Support Worker considers the wellness of the whole person and focuses on health and recovery rather than illness and disability, in order to assist people in finding their own path to recovery. There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to Peer Support. It can take many different forms and be offered wherever people need it.
- The Peer Support Worker role is to help create a welcoming environment in the Biindigan Mental Health Addictions building for Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nations for its Community Members. The role as a Peer Support Worker will be to provide daily contact in a friendly, professional, and approachable manner as part of front-line services.
- The main duty of a Peer Support Worker is to create a community environment in the Biindgan Wellness Building/Centre where community members will feel welcomed, and respected based on our 7 grandfather teachings.
- Welcomes new participants, informing of services and making connections by providing Peer Support.
- Interact with community members and build relationships with them through non-judgmental, respectful, by providing welcoming communication.
- Provides a peer perspective of lived experience.
- Attends community ceremonies and events or drop-ins, as a way of developing relationships with community members
- Participates as a team member with other staff to ensure a safe and caring environment by performing duties such as responding to emergencies and supporting others through methods such as sharing knowledge and information.
- Provide referrals for other services as required and support people engaging in services to navigate the health and social services in our community by providing advocacy and walking alongside when needed.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Peer Support Worker
- Demonstrating a commitment, respect, understanding and knowledge of Traditional Healing
- A positive, professional, courteous, and respectful manner with a desire to help people find their healing path.
- A team player with a knowledge and understanding of the health needs of Indigenous people Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience of the culture, traditions, teachings, ceremonies, and practices of Indigenous people will be considered an asset.
Willingness to participate in Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, teachings and ceremonies
