Job description

We are looking for a Physician Assistant to work collaboratively with a group of primary physicians to offer evidence based full scope of services in Primary Care.

Operating in concert with and under the direction of a licensed physician, the Physician Assistant performs a broad range of medical services. They will work with physicians in the Peace River Medical Clinic to expand their practices, increasing access for unattached patients, and engaging in practice improvement activities. The Physician Assistant will also assist in providing care for underserved populations including Indigenous communities, assist with the sexual health program, and increase primary care services for complex patients requiring chronic disease management and mental health supports.

The Physician Assistant shall possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient-centered care consistent with the National Competency Profile for Canadian Physician Assistants. They will apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate clinical decisions, and carry out diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

What you will do…

  • Provide direct clinical care to patients and consult with and refer to other health care professionals as indicated
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, make differential diagnoses, order appropriate testing, and plan the clinical management of patients
  • Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration in the provision of patient care
  • Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment
  • Address unmet demand, particularly for cancer screening, sexual health, “lumps and bumps”, and injections
  • Provide chronic disease management and mental health supports for complex patients
  • Instruct and educate patients
  • Fully document all aspects of patient care and assists with completion of all required documentation
  • Review clinical care in the light of evidence-based literature
  • Provide and document clinical instructions as required
  • Ensure continuing education, training and development is undertaken to meet CAPA and patient care requirements
  • Participate in practice review and quality improvement activities

What you need to succeed…

  • Graduation from a recognized Physician Assistant education program
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant by the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA)
  • Registration as a Physician Assistant with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)
  • Experience with Primary Care would be considered an asset
  • Understand the Physician Assistant full scope of practice and engage physicians as required
  • Demonstrated ability to empathize with and understand individual patient needs
  • Ability to function cooperatively with physicians and clinic staff in an interdisciplinary setting
  • Ability to build a good working relationship with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals
  • Ability to make evidence-based decisions based on CPSA Standards of Practice
  • Ability to monitor best practices, develop new skills, and apply theory to practice
  • Ability to identify when input and collaboration with other professionals would enhance case management
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts
  • Respect for privacy and confidentiality and the ability to reflect these principles in work processes.
  • High levels of integrity and professional behaviour
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Electronic Medical Records
