Job description

Precon Manufacturing is seeking a highly motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment to join our team as Quality Control Technician.

This opportunity is ideal for an individual seeking to gain valuable professional experience and grow their technical skills in Quality Control. Reporting to the QC Team Leader, this position will work closely with the QC team to apply theory and principles of engineering. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to accuracy and extreme attention to detail. This position will perform Quality Control tests at all stages of production to ensure superior product quality and compliance and is responsible for all QC activities, especially reducing quality incidents.

Location: Coalhurst, AB

Start Date: As early as January 2024
Hours: Days of work are Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturdays and/or overtime as required. Full time, 40+ hours/week. Variable shift start times.

Compensation: Starting rate of $22-$28/hour, commensurate with education and experience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Work safely; understand and comply with all Precon’s health and safety program, OH&S, and any other applicable legislation.
  • Document, monitor, and revise quality requirements in accordance with established policies and regulations.
  • Conduct field and lab tests on concrete to ensure compliance to specifications and standards. Conduct inspections on in-process and finished products. Perform QA (Quality Assurance) monitoring during pre/post pour of concrete products.
  • Oversee all product development procedures to identify deviations from quality standards. Identify opportunities for quality and process efficiency improvements.
  • Initiate and follow up on non-conformance reports, corrective actions, and preventative actions.
  • Prioritize and discuss Quality Control problems with team members; provide guidance and feedback.
  • Review shop drawings to ensure they conform to design concepts/standards.
  • Develop concrete mix design for specific uses and conditions.
  • Interpret Quality Control tests (Three Edge Bearing Test, Hydrostatic Test, Compressive tests, Organic Impurity Tests, Sieve Analysis Tests) and prepare technical reports; (Inspection
  • Maintain cleanliness and regular upkeep of work area and other equipment.
  • Participate in meetings, i.e., morning team Toolbox meeting/stretch, weekly Health & Safety meetings, and others.
  • Participate towards the completion of other related tasks and duties as directed or needed.

Qualifications and Requirements of you:

  • Preferred: Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or Engineering Design Technology, currently enrolled or completed.
  • Will be considered: equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or relevant experience.
  • Dedication to safety; is committed to a healthy and safe work environment. Is willing to do their part and participate in regular meetings, hazard assessments, and other Health & Safety items.
  • Knowledge of concrete mix design.
  • Able to understand and work with QC lab equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of municipal infrastructure.
  • Able to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, engineering plans and specifications.
  • Basic understanding of building materials, specifically concrete and steel.
  • Available to work different start times, overtime, and weekends if needed.
  • Reliable: Can show up to work on time, ready for work, and as scheduled. Reliable transportation to get to and from work is also required as Precon is outside of Lethbridge.
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, team spirit. Approaches problems with challenges and solutions.
  • Strong communication skills. Able to communicate with others effectively and respectfully.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, manufacturing environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and with technology (computers, software, mobile phones, apps, etc.).
  • Current WHMIS 2015 certificate.

Bonus Points for:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in a similar QC or QA-related role.
  • Basic understanding of ASTM and CSA standards related to the industry.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with CAD and Autodesk programs such as Inventor and/or Revit.
  • Complete ACI Concrete Field-Testing certification.
  • Understanding of mix designs, concrete troubleshooting, pipe plant operations and specifications.

Work Conditions and Context

  • Travel/Transportation: Precon is located outside of Lethbridge, so reliable transportation to our worksite is required. Occasional out-of-area and overnight travel may also be expected for training purposes.
  • Conditions: We are a manufacturing/production facility; work will take place in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with overhead and other hazards. Work type involves manual labour, where a majority of the work is performed standing and moving around the work environment, assisting in the testing of concrete products. Work will be performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and temperatures and will involve conditions of heat, cold, dust, noise, wind.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required (i.e., hard hat, high-visibility clothing, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, etc.).
  • Work will also involve things such as climbing ladders, using Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), etc.
  • Equipment and Technology: Requires the use of computers, software, QC lab equipment, analyzing data, engineering plans, drawings, phones, applications, etc.
  • Telecommuting/Working from home: Not available.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, managers.
  • Other: Required to maintain cleanliness and regular upkeep of work area and other equipment; participate in training and on-going learning opportunities.
