The Nova Scotia Museum, consisting of 28 museum sites, is the most decentralized museum in Canada. It is also one of the oldest provincial museums in the country. The Nova Scotia Museum is responsible for the provincial collection of over one million artifacts and specimens housed at museum sites and storage facilities across the province.

About Our Opportunity


The Regional Coordinatoris responsible for the management of site staff and museum operations for Haliburton House, Shand House and Prescott House. This includes:

  • Setting and evaluating staff performance targets, promoting diversity and a healthy, respectful workplace, demonstrating the leadership competencies, promoting teamwork and individual development, and maintaining internal communications.

  • Development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of visitor experience. The Coordinator will collaborate with the Manager in the development of strategic plans for visitor and user experiences.

  • Continual improvement in program delivery and services through ongoing consultation and engagement with NSM staff, community groups, educators, partners, and sponsors. The Coordinator ensures programs and events are widely promoted through a variety of social media platforms.

  • Ensure preventive conservation, policies and procedures relating to the care of historic buildings and the provincial collection are followed. Ensure collections and building inventories, inspections and condition reports are completed as required.

  • Monitor site revenues and expenditures such as adhering to procurement guidelines, cost-effective acquiring of goods and services, and accurately forecasting budget requirements.

Qualifications and Experience


A university degree in a relevant discipline combined with several years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Preserving the care of historic buildings and museum collections.

The successful applicant is able to effectively manage a wide variety of work areas by prioritizing and adjusting tasks and workplans. You demonstrate flexibility and resilience in responding to situations that can arise in a 24-hour, 7 day a week operation.

You are computer proficient, including the use of software packages such as Microsoft Office (Outlook and Word), internet, emailing, web-based applications.

Working Conditions


Must have a valid driver’s license.


This job is partly office-based, but also requires frequent travel to museum sites (heritage buildings, trails, grounds, collections storage areas) and rural communities and sometimes Halifax.


Daily and physical demands include walking on extensive grounds and trails, completing year-round site checks and responding to 24-hour security alarms, and assisting with site care and movement of equipment, furniture, and objects.


Some museum buildings are unheated and have minimal amenities. Frequent interruptions and requests for information from staff and the public require flexibility, coordination, and delegation. Ongoing pressure to meet operational requirements and manage staff from a distance.

Additional Information


This is a one (1) year TERM employment opportunity with a possibility of an extension. The appointment status (‘term’, ‘temporary’ or ‘casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade:EC 07

Salary Range:$2,211.68 - $2,764.61 Bi-Weekly
