The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Inpatient Surgical Care, Child Life Services and Neurology clinic, the Neurology Clinic Nurse is responsible and accountable for the application of current theory and research in the delivery of family centered patient care consistent with the philosophy, objectives, vision and mission of IWK Health.  The Staff Nurse’s focus will be to provide care to children, youth and families primarily in the ambulatory clinic setting.  Follow up of Neurology service patients on the inpatient units in collaboration with the inpatient interdisciplinary team is included within the role.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Working collaboratively and consultatively with patients, families, and members of the Interdisciplinary health care team to ensure coordinated, best practice care for infants, children, and youth with Neurological conditions.
• Ambulatory nursing experience considered an asset.
• Child/youth and family interviews, assessment, intervention and follow-up/evaluation as indicated on a direct, consultative or monitoring basis.
• Coordinating appointments, case conferences or telehealth conferences for families as indicated.
• Educating and teaching patients and families as indicated.
• Telephone facilitated nursing care.
• Acting as a resource for families regarding support services available in the Maritimes.
• Understanding interdisciplinary services and referring the client/family appropriately as required.
• Developing and maintaining internal and external partnerships.
• Advocating on behalf of patients and families.
• Participating in implementing change to continually improve service provision.
• Coordinating and collaborating in the development and implementation of transition process and care paths for the neurology patient population
 
Hours of Work
7.5hrs  Monday-Friday
Your Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required (candidates with commensurate experience and education will be considered).
• Registered, or eligible to be registered, with NSCN required.
• Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate, required.
• Minimum two (3 years current pediatric nursing experience is required; experience completing child and family assessments is required. Ambulatory nursing experience an asset.
• Demonstrated familiarity with support services available in the Maritimes for families of children with neurological conditions preferred.
• Recognized team player with the demonstrated ability to work independently required.
• Proven ability to be self-directed, organized and flexible required.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an inter-professional team and to work independently required.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem solving, and decision making abilities required.
• Demonstrated commitment to professional development and practice required.
• Demonstrated effective communication (verbal & written), interpersonal, and leadership skills required.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative required.
• Demonstrated excellent time management and organizational skills required.
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Family Centered Care required.
• Demonstrated assessment and teaching skills required.
• Demonstrated professionalism and ability to conduct oneself in a mature manner required.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Windows, MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc) preferred.
• Demonstrated experience and competency in with Meditech/PCI an asset.
• Knowledge of research processes preferred.
• Previous ambulatory experience, particularly with children with neurological conditions preferred.
• Competency in other languages considered an asset; French preferred.
