Casual Registered Nurse (RN) - Hospice Residence

Since 1995, the compassionate caring staff and volunteers of Hospice Vaughan have supported individuals and their families, as they journey through a life-limiting illness. Serving with love and dignity, our commitment is to care for individuals to live fully and ensure a better ending.

Our new Hospice Palliative Care Hub includes a 12-bed hospice residence, providing a final peaceful homelike space for individuals and their families who require end of life support.

We are looking for an experienced professional to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) within our

Hospice Residence.

Job Purpose/Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) will be responsible for providing professional, evidence-based client centred care for individuals staying in the Hospice Residence including all aspects of client and family care in accordance with the Regulated Health Professionals Act and College of Nurses Ontario Standards. The RN will be holistic, careful, and ethical in interactions with clients, families and colleagues, and make sound judgements based on experience and knowledge.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Care of Clients Living in the Hospice Residence

  • Plans individualized appropriate care for clients through assessment and consultation with the client, and/or substitute decision maker as appropriate regarding needs, wishes and preferences for care.
  • Delivers services that are designed to improve quality of life of the resident by incorporating the 8 domains of issues associated with illness and bereavement
  • Provides competent, evidence-based clinical care that respects client autonomy and uses critical thinking skills.
  • Recognizes the importance of maintaining a home-like environment while also following Health and Safety and Infection Prevention and Control principles and practices.
  • Evaluates, reassesses, and revises symptom management goals and plan of care
  • Removal of garbage as required within the residence

Qualifications:

Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario

  • 2-5 years demonstrated experience providing hospice palliative care in community, hospital or appropriate long term care setting.
  • Evidence of a demonstrated a client centered approach to care and ability to work with families
  • Demonstrated expertise with pain and symptom assessment and management
  • Excellent communication, verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates expertise with pain and symptom assessment and management in clients receiving end of life care.
  • Administers medication appropriately including narcotic control
  • Management of medications, application of treatments and dressings, transcription of

Physician orders

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to predict changes in resident status
  • Work collaboratively with the resident and family
  • Ability to facilitate relationships when working with interdisciplinary and direct care team
  • Preference will be given to those applicants with Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care, CAPCE certificate, LEAP and/or CNA Palliative Certification (willingness to complete Fundamentals of Palliative care within 6 months of hire and initiate other certifications within 1 year of hire)
  • Participates in mandatory education/training in-services for skill development and updates on new and/or relevant information on best practices
