The Pediatric Inpatient Surgical Care Unit is located at McMaster Children's Hospital Site of Hamilton Health Sciences. This inpatient unit provides acute tertiary and sub-specialty surgical care including pediatric trauma to children age 0-17. This is a dynamic fast-paced multidisciplinary acute care unit where specialized pre-operative and post-operative surgical care is provided.
As a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the RN will apply their clinical expertise of pediatric diseases requiring surgical management to provide comprehensive nursing care to children 0-17 years as outlined within the practice standards and guidelines by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
12 hour shifts, days and nights, weekends, holidays
1. Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing
3. Minimum of 2 years recent nursing experience (within the last 3 years) in a tertiary pediatric hospital
4. Current BCLS certification
5. PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) Certificate preferred
6. Sound knowledge of pediatric illnesses, symptoms and related interventions
7. Demonstration of clinical expertise in pediatric psychosocial assessments, pediatric growth and development, critical thinking and problem solving
8. Demonstration and knowledge in the role of community liaison and access to supports for the children and families
9. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
10. Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and also collaborative with a multidisciplinary team
11. Knowledge, skill and ability to provide health teaching for pediatric patients and their families, specific to the needs of the clinic population
