The Opportunity:

This Research Associate position is for a six-month term. The aforementioned position will be responsible for leading and fulfilling Olds College Centre for Innovation (OCCI’s) contractual obligations to an industrial development corporation. Terms of the contractual agreement state that OCCI will develop a conceptual plan for an applied research program focused on naturalized remediation systems for stormwater management. In developing the plan, this position will consult with water quality specialists at Olds College of Agriculture & Technology, as well as specialists in other organizations.

Key Job Functions:

  • Develop a conceptual plan of an outdoor applied research program for stormwater quality remediation in a commercial business park.
  • Establish a network of consultants, including surface water quality remediation experts within Olds College of Agriculture & Technology, and externally, at other post-secondary institutions or private organizations.
  • Apply project management principles towards the completion of a conceptual plan for an applied research facility
  • Complete a report detailing the conceptual plan, and make recommendations to direct the implementation of the plan, its associated work breakdown structure, associated equipment and costs, risk identification and mitigation, among other specifications.
  • Identify applied research and education opportunities to be conducted at this facility.
  • Engage in monthly progress update meetings with the industrial development corporation, as well as a final meeting to present the report to the client.


Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Biological Science, or a related field of study from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Ten years of professional experience related to planning, designing, and conducting applied research in surface water quality remediation would be considered in lieu of a postgraduate degree.
  • Evidence of project management training, and proof of application.
  • Designation as a bona fide professional engineer (P.Eng.) or engineer-in-training (E.I.T.), professional agrologist (P.Ag.) or agrologist-in-training (A.I.T.), professional biologist (P.Bio.) or biologist-in-training (B.I.T.), is desirable.
  • Evidence of research experience and productivity.
