Job description

Jake's House Community Residence in Lucan is the first home in Canada to seniors and individuals with autism. What we do in Lucan will be the building block for future homes as there are other Jake's House Community Residence's already on the horizon. Education will be provided for all staff with opportunity for advancements as we grow.

RPN:Reports to Director of Care

Qualifications:

1. A sound knowledge and background in geriatric, rehabilitation or long term care nursing including activation, nursing and personnel administration.

2. Knowledge of the appropriate sections of the Health Disciplines Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Pharmacy Act, Food and Drugs Act (Canada), Narcotic Control Act (Canada) and other pertinent Federal, Provincial and Municipal Statutes which influence the operation of the retirement residence and more specifically the nursing department.

3. All Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) who provide care to residents in the facility shall have a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

4. All RPN staff who will be administering medications to residents shall have completed the following:

a. A RPN Nursing program which contains a Medication Administration course as part of the core program

b. A RPN Medication Administration Certificate program provided in Ontario since 1985 or:

c. A Medication Administration Certificate course provided out of province and which has been evaluated by the residence’s Health and Wellness Manager to determine if the content is equivalent to the course content offered in the Ontario Community College Registered Practical Nurse Medication Administration Certificate program.

5. Good physical and mental health and free from communicable disease.

6. Certified in CPR and First Aid.

Physical Demands:

  • Standing for long periods of time.
  • Walking short distances and up/down staircases.

3. Able to complete all physical aspects of job requirements.

  • Reading/seeing documentation both in paper format and on a computer screen.
  • Hearing differences in phone ring tones and/or in fire system horns or alerts for emergency response purposes.
  • Speaking/communicating to individuals with impairments and disabilities.

Job Description:

1. Conducts duties in accordance with Jake's House Community Residence policies and procedures, as well as, government regulations, laws and policies Experience working with seniors and/or residents with developmental disabilities preferred.

2. Understands and follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce

the risk of injury to self, other staff members and residents. Promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations.

3. Represents the residence at appropriate community and professional meetings. Attends workshops, in-service sessions and other scheduled meetings as authorized by the Wellness Manager.

4. Provides assistance as required to enhance the volunteer and public relations programs.

5. Effectively communicates and interacts with residents, family members, visitors and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner.

6. As a supervisor, ensures that all work performed is conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with Jake's House Community Residence George Retirement Residence policies and procedures including Occupational Health and Safety procedures.

7. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, other staff members and residents. Promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations. Observes all fire and safety rules.

8. Ensures the maintenance of a clean working environment.

9. Conducts duties in accordance with Jake's House Community Residence policies and procedures, as well as, government regulations, laws and policies.

10. Maintains confidentiality of residents’ personal information.

11. Develops the residence’s statement of purpose and a description of the functions of the residence.

12. Develops and implements policies and procedures for the unit (in collaboration with the Director of Care).

13. Co-ordinates nursing services with other services in the residence. Liaises with medical services, other professional services and external agencies.

14. Supervises and assists non-professional staff. Participates in shift report, records significant changes in residents' condition, care plan and changes in physician's orders. Reviews residents' charts, ensuring that all requirements are promptly acted upon. Notifies physicians of change in residents' condition (as required).

15. Provides first aid to staff members when necessary and completes Employee Incident Reports.

16. Ensures all medications required by residents are received on the unit. Administers medications including all injections and narcotics.

17. Participates in the orientation, on-the-job training and in-servicing of nursing staff as required.

18. Requisitions and receives supplies as required.

19. Participates in Quality Assurance and Continuous Quality Improvement activities.

20. Assists in developing and revising position descriptions for each classification on the unit.

21. Ensures representation of staff on committees which affect the service.

22. Assists the DOC in ensuring the efficient and meaningful conduct of regularly scheduled Resident Care Conferences.

23. Performs other related duties as required.

24. Maintains confidentiality of residents’ personal information.

25. Other duties as assigned.
