Position: Safety & Environmental Engineer

Department: Health & Safety

Hours: 8:00 16:30

Term Position: 12 Months 

 

Reporting to the Environmental, Health and Safety Manager, you will be responsible for Identifying gaps, developing action plans, and implementing corrective actions to optimize environmental systems and the site wide environmental program. Liaise with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with environmental requirements.

 

Responsibilities

 

 

  • Identify gaps in current practices (a) review environmental assessments performed by outside resources (b) assess government and regulatory requirements (c) examine current practices of the site.
  • Generate remediation plan to address identified gaps and implement an Environmental Management System at the site. Act in the capacity of Project Manager/Liaison during the execution of the plan when required.
  • Collaborate with personnel from each department to understand activities which affect the environment.  Assess impact and propose engineering solutions to ensure employee Safety and Environmental laws and regulations are respected. 
  • Create a review/verification system to ensure compliance is maintained.
  • Complete site Sustainability, Safety and Continuous Improvement Projects.
  • Complete all required Environmental Reporting (NPRI, Statistics Canada, Environmental Covenants, FEWW tracking etc.)
  • Stay abreast to the changing environmental landscape and legislation.
  • Work with management to forecast impact of environmental legislation changes to the site.
  • Provide documented evidence of program allowing prompt responses to requested information.  Provide annual environmental report for regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with good manufacturing practices (cGMP) and regulatory requirements in a manufacturing environment.
  • Co-Host corporate and customer EHS Audits with EHS Safety Manager.
  • Support overall Safety and Health Programs (i.e. execution of equipment Safety and ergonomic assessments, addressing safety concerns and updating of SOP’s as required etc.).
  • Participate in the area of occupational health, safety, and wellness.
  •  

    Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering preferably Environmental, BioSystems, Mechanical and/or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.  Considerations will be made for Environmental Engineers who do not currently hold a degree but are committed to continuous learning and ongoing development
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Office, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a fundamental understanding of applicable Federal and Provincial Legislation.
  • Fluent in English verbal, reading, and writing skills
  • Self-motivated, positive attitude, attention to detail and a team player.

    Experience

  • Working knowledge of the associated regulations that govern the pharmaceutical industry is an asset.
  • Previous experience related to the management of hazardous products/ and or environmental programs.
  • Previous manufacturing experience is an asset.
