SENIOR ACCOUNTANT

Native Women's Association of Canada is a National Indigenous Organization that defends the rights, delivers programming to, and amplifies the perspectives of Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse people in Canada, inclusive of First Nations – on and off reserve, status and non-status, disenfranchised – Métis, and Inuit. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Under the supervision and direction of the Chief Operating Officer, the Senior Accountant will play a critical role in developing and implementing a financial strategy for the organization. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for creating, reviewing, analysing and interpreting financial and budgetary reports, driving the organization’s overall financial planning processes, ensuring cash-flow is appropriate for the operations, establishing risk management strategies by leading the analysis of the organization’s liabilities and investments, and maintaining compliance with all legal and regulatory laws and corporate policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Create, coordinate, and evaluate the financial programs and supporting information systems of the organization to include budgeting, tax planning, and conservation of assets;

· Manage financial controls and accounting procedures;

· Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal budgetary reporting requirements;

· Oversee the approval and processing of expenditure, department budgets, mass salary updates and account maintenance;

· Ensure full transparency over the financial performance of the organization;

· Coordinate the preparation of financial statements, financial reports, special analyses, and information reports;

· Support the Executive Director with the preparation of monthly and annual financial plans;

· Maintain speed and accuracy of billings and client payments;

· Develop and implement finance, accounting, billing and auditing procedures;

· Establish and maintain appropriate internal control safeguards;

· Assess and evaluate financial performance of the organization with regard to long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts;

· Ensure records systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards;

· Coordinate annual audits and works cooperatively with external auditors;

· Develop tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the Executive Director and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations;

· Oversee budgeting and the implementation of budgets so as to monitor progress and present financial metrics both internally and externally;

· Supervise the finance department to ensure proper functioning of all systems, databases and financial software;

· Ensure payroll is processed in accordance with legislation and the organization’s policies, contracts and compensation agreements;

· Develop policies and procedures and as needed work in conjunction with other units;

· Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures of the organization;

· Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation;

· Perform other related duties as assigned from time to time;

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· University Degree in Accounting or Finance. MBA preferred;

· Accounting Designation in good standing (CA, CMA/CPA) required;

· Minimum of ten (10 ) years of experience in senior level accounting or finance position;

· Experience with NGOs, organizations, interest groups and government or government agencies or business/corporate entities is an asset;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

The employee must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

· Outstanding knowledge and understanding of the GAAP, IFRS, federal and provincial financial regulations;

· Advanced proficiency with accounting software;

· Strong background in preparation of proposals for grants and donations;

· Prior experience in dealing with federal and provincial departments will be an asset;

· Strong working knowledge of MS Office;

· Some knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally, their cultures, histories and traditions;

· Bilingualism is an asset
