Position Title: Sr Compliance Advisor

Team and Location: Finance - Calgary, AB

Minimum Starting Salary From: $150,000/year

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Middle Office, the Manager Trade Compliance is responsible to prevent, detect and mitigate regulatory risks associated with Parkland's growing Supply & Trading business, including ensuring physical and financial trading activities are executed in accordance with internal guidelines and external laws, rules and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a high level of expertise in all regulations, directives and guidance which apply to the Front, Middle and Back Offices for Parkland's Supply & Trading Activities.
  • Provide input and risk assessments to Senior Management and the Supply & Trading business, regarding emerging issues within the market and interpretation of existing, new and amended laws, rules and regulations.
  • Analyze Parkland's Supply & Trading business activities and initiatives to identify and mitigate potential regulatory, reputation and financial risks.
  • Provide virtual and in-person education, training, guidance and direction on compliance issues to employees across Parkland and its subsidiary offices.
  • Identify training needs based on requirements identified through the compliance monitoring process and KPI's.
  • Develop and maintain reports for review by management and senior leadership.
  • Act as the key compliance relationship manager and provide advisory services on compliance matters to management and staff. This may involve requesting interpretations directly from the regulators and/or arranging information sessions with the regulators. Work proactively with business line contacts and management to ensure effective and efficient compliance risk management solutions.
  • Review and submit various forms, disclosures and requests from regulators.
  • Continually engage with Front, Middle and Back Office staff to identify opportunities to implement more effective compliance-related policies and procedures.
  • Elevate high profile or high-risk cases or issues to Senior Management to ensure transparency and prompt resolution where necessary.
  • Respond to inquires and examinations from both regulators and internal stakeholders, related to policies and procedures and regulatory obligations.
  • Consult on new business or new products requests to assist Front, Middle and Back Offices with incorporating compliance requirements into these initiatives.
  • Assist management and staff in communicating and implementing changes to applicable policies and procedures.
  • Perform periodic reviews and assessments to ensure compliance policies and risk controls are operating appropriately.
  • Develop and assist in the design, implementation, maintenance and administration of controls, procedures, policies, investigations, training, testing, surveillance and the overall compliance monitoring program as it relates to Parkland's risk management framework.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Post-secondary degree preferably in Law/ Economics / Finance or a related field;
  • Minimum 10 years of experience working in a commodities middle office, risk management or regulatory compliance department
  • Extensive familiarity with regulatory requirements for Supply & Trading Activities in North American energy;
  • Experience with Allegro (ETRM) preferred; Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to think outside of the box and deal with ambiguity;
  • Strong interpersonal leadership skills, creativity and consensus;
  • Proven business acumen and attention to detail and a strong commitment to ensuring deadlines are maintained and achieved;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with the proven ability to work well in cross-functional teams and independently with limited supervision;
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and thrive in a high volume, fast-paced and evolving work environment, adjusting to changing and conflicting demands, responsibilities and issues.
