The Transmission System Planning and Asset Management team is shaping the future of Calgary’s ever growing electrical transmission system. Bring your well-rounded Engineering background to manage complex studies and connection proposals to define and defend transmission capital projects, and ensure the projects are executed as planned.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Development of an innovative capital planning and asset portfolio
  • Perform technical studies related to transmission system planning, operation and design (i.e. load flow, short circuit, voltage stability, arc flash, etc.)
  • Develop long-term transmission planning and asset replacement strategies through system assessments, and risk-based economic analysis to identify potential future projects to address system and asset deficiencies
  • Prepare engineering study reports and interconnection proposals for submission to the AESO through the AESO Connection Process. Manage and provide oversight to system and customer projects through the AESO Connection Process
  • Represent Transmission System Planning and Asset Management Team by providing technical expertise on various working groups and committees
  • Lead cross-functional teams, work collaboratively and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholder groups including the AESO, Asset Management, Project Management, Engineering, Operations, Distribution Planning and Field Services
  • Project and program ownership duties for transmission projects and programs, including providing direct support on projects
  • Develop and maintain power system models and data in PSS/E, PSCAD, SKM PowerTools, DSATools, Ratekit, Cymcap, and other software as required
  • Calculate equipment electrical parameters (e.g. facility ratings, transformer and line impedances, etc.) and meet modeling requirements in accordance with Alberta Reliability Standards
  • Identify, recommend and develop processes and procedural improvements for calculation and modelling of various equipment parameters and data submissions
  • Support the Projects Group in development and completion of required AESO project data submissions to ensure project schedules and regulatory requirements are met
  • Prepare and defend strong capital justifications or business cases though analytical evaluations to obtain regulatory approval for transmission planning and asset driven capital additions, infrastructure replacement, or modification projects
  • Evaluate benefits and risks of proposed technical solutions and provide innovative recommendations of alternate solutions as required
  • Provide technical support for regulatory applications, including Transmission Cost of Service and Facility Applications, and provide technical expertise, including being a witness for regulatory hearings.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior staff by sharing technical knowledge and expertise
  • Manage consultant resources and provide oversight for outsourced projects
Education Required:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • P.Eng status with The Association of Professionals in Engineering and Geoscience in Alberta (APEGA)
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years of engineering experience within the electric utility industry
  • Broad technical knowledge in transmission or operational planning and asset management, combined with an ability to manage projects through conceptual engineering and alternative development stages
  • Experience developing strategies, creating execution plans, and writing business cases for capital asset projects
  • Experience in technical evaluation, design and construction with transmission utility assets including substations and transmission lines
  • Experience using PSS/E, Cymcap, SKM PowerTools, ArcPro, Ratekit, DSATools, or PSCAD
  • Regulatory experience in rate and facility applications considered an asset

  • Interact with stakeholders and regulatory bodies; credible, persuasive, and clear in both oral and written presentations
  • Analytical with a strong interest in problem solving
  • Organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues and multiple projects
  • Ability to “sell” and defend capital upgrades
  • Project Management skills with a good understanding of project scope, cost and schedules

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
