Orebody knowledge (OBK) is more important than ever. As Senior Geoscientist, OBK, you will play a pivotal role in finding opportunities and implementing initiatives that add quantifiable value to our projects through fundamental geoscience. 

 

You are the right fit for this role if you have in-depth knowledge of the challenges and opportunities that exist across the mining value chain, from resource definition through to mine closure. You have proven success in project management, implementing new technologies and workflows, from scoping, to contracting, through to operationalization. You are self-motivated and able to prioritize project work and initiatives through efficient time management and an awareness of the benefit of a minimum viable product. You have excellent data analysis skills, with extensive experience integrating different types of data (geochemistry, geology, geophysics, structure, images). 

 

You will demonstrate your excellent interpersonal skills by working closely, both in-person and online, with our advanced projects and operations teams located across the Americas. You are excited to share your technical knowledge with others to grow the overall technical abilities of the team. This position reports to the Principal Geoscientist, and is based in Vancouver, BC, with the option to work remotely up to two days per week. 

  

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental guidelines and procedures

  • Actively identify and scope out new opportunities for value creation through application of geoscience solutions to OBK challenges and initiatives

  • Management of short-to-medium term technical initiatives, from project planning, to contracting, through to implementation and operationalization

  • Advise and provide technical support and mentorship on best practice data acquisition (field program design and execution), validation, analysis and modeling for brownfields exploration, Project Development, BU technical groups, and Operations, including regular site visits and interaction with key project stakeholders

  • Work in close collaboration with Teck’s applied mineralogists and metallurgists to optimize and develop geochemical and/or spectral predictors for mineralogical and metallurgical parameters

  • Conduct robust data integration and analysis including application of advanced statistical techniques and integration with multidimensional geoscientific data to advise decision making

  • Provide leadership and support for sampling, analytical method selection and laboratory oversight, and assist with regular audits

  • Participate in Teck-sponsored OBK research activities and results to ensure maximum benefit from these investments

  • Provide technical leadership, training, and mentorship to increase geoscience competencies within the Teck geoscience community

  • Travel up to 30% to our Advanced Projects in the Americas

Qualifications:

  • MSc or PhD in Geoscience or a related discipline (e.g., geometallurgy, geochemistry)

  • Registered Professional Geoscientist (or application in progress) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in the mining industry or applied research, with practical experience in Orebody Knowledge

  • Familiarity in the application of project and mine engineering principles, metallurgical and processing techniques and the key geoscientific drivers of comminution and recovery

  • Experience in the characterization (visual, spectral, geochemical, structural) of a range of ore deposit types with particular focus on porphyry, sediment-hosted massive sulfide, and magmatic sulfide deposits

  • Strong knowledge of geochemistry applied to brownfields exploration, advanced projects, resource estimation, mining operations, and closure

  • Expert in quantitative characterization of key value drivers in advanced projects and operations using a mathematical approach to solving complex problems

  • Adept in modelling and visualization of data using 3D software (e.g., Leapfrog)

  • Proficient in comprehensive data analysis and data manipulation using programming or statistical software packages (e.g., R, Python, ioGAS) and expertise in data science and machine learning

  • Strong written and oral English skills including advanced writing, presentation, interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Spanish language skills are considered a major asset

  • Resource estimation skills is an asset

  • Demonstrates leadership in the health, safety, community, environment and sustainability culture of Teck

  • Acts with honesty and integrity and sets an example for others by demonstrating a common-sense approach, focuses on listening and learning in order to make the right decision

  • Takes initiative, self-motivated and accountable with the capacity for independent judgment

  • Understands how to get things done through formal channels, applying key practices, policies and procedures to achieve objectives

Salary Range: $130,000 - $160,000


The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
