At Sinai Health, we care, create possibilities and offer hope. Sinai Health is looking for an experienced and dedicated Senior Human Factors Specialist who is aligned to our purpose to join our team. The successful incumbent will support in leading the adoption of the principles and practices of Human Factors engineering in the designs of new spaces and processes, technology implementation, including various clinical information systems and medical devices, and patient safety and quality improvement initiatives. The incumbent has a background in Human Factors, design and evaluation and will work with multidisciplinary stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Build relationships with all internal and external multidisciplinary stakeholders to keep pace with renovation developments, technology implementation and future projects
  • Support future project planning activities specifically as it relates to the adoption of new medical devices and technologies, work environments, workflows and processes
  • In partnership with key stakeholders, establish a systematic understanding of front-line and environmental needs for the planned devices and IT systems; translating these into thorough system requirements
  • Identify and provide recommendations to the Project Lead and inter-professional team regarding iterative design, testing and refining of system design through system build processes
  • Assess change readiness and identify key stakeholders to support the achievement of project milestones and outcomes
  • Assist in the identification of Human Factors activities that need to be included in Project Work Plans for each area
  • Apply a Human Factors lens, identify change management and training needs and develop necessary training/educational materials as it pertains to mitigating identified risks
  • Assess for work environment, workflow and process, medical device and technology implementation and adoption related risks and in partnership with stakeholders develop informed risk mitigation strategies
  • Provide expert support at the time of implementation and develop new approaches to manage implementation and adoption obstacles arising
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of evaluation, implementation and adoption strategies; summarize lessons learned and make recommendations for ongoing process improvement
  • Improve operational efficiency by identifying and recommending new or improved human resources policies and procedures as they relate to future projects
  • Take a lead role in supporting a culture of safety, risk mitigation, quality, and service
  • Actively participate in Project and other related committees and working groups as required
  • Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements
  • Successful completion of a master's degree in a related field e.g. Human Factors engineering, systems design engineering, clinical engineering, human-computer interaction, etc. from an accredited educational institution
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional working experience in Human Factors engineering, preferably in healthcare
  • Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may be considered
  • In-depth understanding of and hands-on experience with user-centered design methodologies, including ethnographic studies, heuristic evaluations, and usability testing
  • Strong analytical abilities, ideally coupled with superior organizational skills and experience coordinating multiple assignments/projects simultaneously
  • Deep knowledge in patient safety science and prospective risk management methods
  • Significant experience in process improvement with proven success leading, monitoring and evaluating process/systems to identify and achieve efficiencies
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook); experience in Adobe Illustrator a definite asset
  • Superior stakeholder engagement skills with demonstrated knowledge of and experience with project management processes and methodologies
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; professional, diplomatic and confident with a proven ability to work with individuals across all levels of the organization and external stakeholders
  • Flexible and self-directed with the ability to manage competing priorities during periods of rapid change and transition with constantly shifting priorities
  • Models collaborative, cross-portfolio engagement to build consensus and create solutions to complex issues; demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of effective strategies to maximize inter-professional collaboration
  • Possesses a high level of accountability and proven capability to clearly define and articulate requirements, priorities, impacts, and solutions
  • Ability to facilitate small group discussions, develop and deliver training and make presentations
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
