About the role
The Senior Property Accountant is responsible for real estate accounting and generating timely, accurate financial reports for MaRS' real estate assets and related businesses. This role also supports internal decision making through thoughtful and detailed analysis of actual results and preparation of guiding budgets and forecasts. In this dynamic and fast-paced position, you must be adept at collaborating with individuals across all areas of the Innovation Hubs team to provide accurate and timely financial reports .
Key Responsibilities

• Financial Accounting and Reporting: prepare and review monthly reporting, including month-end entries with supporting schedules, accruals, general ledger accounts and bank reconciliations, HST returns, and budget to actual variances.
• Property Management Accounting: maintain tenant recovery models ensuring adherence to the recovery methodology and leases, prepare and record operating costs and realty tax adjustments, and prepare annual operating costs statements and final billings.
• Assist in maintaining financial models, updating forecasts, and performing analyses to support MDEI senior management on decision-making.
• Support the annual audit through the preparation of schedules and supporting documentation, on time, with attention to details, and in collaboration with auditors.
• Ensure accurate and timely delivery of monthly financial results, along with any supporting schedules that are required to assist the Innovation Hubs team in making informed financial decisions.
• Budgets & Forecasts: Assist the Senior Director, Property Accounting with the preparation of detailed annual budgets and re-forecasts, by providing meaningful insights into the financial results and making recommendations accordingly.
• Construction and Project Accounting: Maintain systems to track capital project costs (budgets, commitments, expenditures, holdbacks) and reconcile them to general ledger.
• Provide mentorship and support to junior team members, participate in special projects and process improvements. Manage lenders and banking administration

Qualifications:

• Completed Bachelor degree or similar, in business admin, commerce, or similar field
• CPA designation or working towards a CPA designation, or equivalent experience combined with university degree, an asset
• 5 years of full-cycle real-estate / commercial property accounting experience
• Understanding of accounting standards
• Strong analytical skills
• Intermediate Excel skills
• Collaborative and a team player

• Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000
