Job description

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more Senior Researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

Dr. Erin Millions (Department of History) is seeking a Senior Research Assistant to support the project Métis Histories in the British Empire. Dr. Millions’ research examines various aspects of Métis histories, including histories of nineteenth-century Métis education. The Senior Research Assistant will undertake archival research and analysis and conduct research in support of grant applications and publications. The Senior Research Assistant must be able to work independently to prioritize, plan, and organize their work to complete assignments in a timely manner under parameters defined by the supervisor.

The period of work is flexible, as are the number of hours per week. The Senior Research Assistant must complete up to 100 hours of work between 1 May 2024 and 31 August 2024. The work hours could be completed within 3 weeks, or spread out over a longer period of time. The successful applicant must provide a schedule of work at the beginning of the work period that outlines their work dates and hours between 1 May 2024 and 31 August 2024.

Indigenous applicants are encouraged to confidentially self-identify at time of application.

Duties May Include:

  • Perform academic historical research using archival sources
  • Conduct online database searches to identify archival sources
  • Transcribe historical documents
  • Catalogue historical documents
  • Perform archival research on-site at the Archives of Manitoba
  • Prepare literature reviews in support of grant applications and publications
  • Perform routine clerical and administrative duties to support research activities
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

Qualifications:

  • Effective written and oral communication
  • Can read cursive writing
  • Ability to navigate online research
  • Ability to work independently
  • Must have access to a computer, Excel, and Word software
  • Preference given to students with experience conducting historical research using primary sources. This can include course assignments. Address experience conducting archival research and/or working with primary sources in your cover letter.

In addition, applicants must have completed or will have completed the credit units outlined below by 30 April 2024. List relevant courses and your grade for each course in your cover letter or resume.

  • Minimum of 60 credit units at the University Level in any subject, and
  • preference given to students who have complete a minimum of 12 credit units in combination any of or a combination of Canadian History, Indigenous History, or Indigenous Studies courses.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be between 1 May 2024 and 31 August 2024, and estimated total hours of work will be approximately 100 hours.

Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted remotely, but some in-person meetings or work sessions in Winnipeg will be required.
