We are currently seeking to add a
Shop and Equipment Manager to our team

The Shop and Equipment Manager will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities at the repair facilities. The repair facilities perform the maintenance, repair, servicing of KBL’s heavy equipment and long-haul fleet equipment (trucks and trailers). You will lead a team of skilled technicians, manage the maintenance schedule, and ensure that all assets are in optimal condition to meet safety and performance standards.


The Shop and Equipment Manager is accountable to troubleshoot major and minor mechanical problems, as well as have the ability to repair and adjust all necessary mechanical components and maintain detailed records. This position is also responsible for apprenticing 1st to 4th year Heavy Duty Mechanic’s Apprentice.


Note: This Job Description may not encompass the entire scope of this role, as other duties maybe assigned as required.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Manage repair and maintenance for trucks and trailers.
    • Schedule heavy equipment for repairs, maintenance, and inspections.
    • Schedule trucks and trailers for repairs, maintenance, and inspections in accordance with regulatory standards.
    • Support fleet operators to trouble shoot problems and provide guidance and direction.
    • Assign daily and upcoming tasks and ongoing duties to the maintenance team.
    • Oversee preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend the life of the fleet.
    • Generate reports on fleet performance, maintenance costs, and Equipment reliability.
    • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and implement best practices.
    • Schedule fleet for third party servicing for warranty work and or overflow repairs in conjunction with Shop Foreman.
    • Source and orders parts and shop supplies.
    • Streamline and track workorders for maintenance for each unit.
    • Review and approve invoices.

  • Complete “A” and “B” Services on all equipment:
    • Complete necessary repairs and required maintenance as per the scheduled servicing.
    • Task mechanic’s and apprentices with duties for both types of servicing that is within their level of competency.
    • Ensure the Service A and Service B documentation is being completed in a detailed and timely manner.
    • Collect oil samples.

  • Commercial Vehicle Inspection.
    • Inspect equipment as per commercial vehicle inspection guidelines.
    • Repair, overhaul, maintain any components that are broken or measure out of specification.
    • Complete all applicable documentation and file according to commercial vehicle inspection regulations.
    • Ensure there is a supply of “CVIP” stickers to tag inspected equipment.

  • Adhere to KBL’s Health and Safety Management System, be familiar with and follow all applicable safe work practices, safe operating procedures, and safety specifications detailed in equipment manuals and manufacturer’s specifications.
    • Ensure that those persons assisting in the shop are also following applicable safe work standards.
    • Communicate any unsafe conditions or incidents and near misses to the Logistics Coordinator in a timely manner.
    • Lead weekly toolbox meetings.
    • Complete shop inspections at required frequency.
    • Ensure all tools and Equipment are safe to use and being operated in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
    • Ensure maintenance team have correct PPE and the right tools for the job.

  • Housekeeping
    • Keep the shop clean.
    • Task housekeeping work to apprentices and labourers.
    • Keep tools clean and stored when not in use.
    • Manage waste generated in the Shop and maintain a clean yard.
    • Ensure parts are where they should be.
    • Assist Logistics Coordinator with parts and inventory management.

Physical Requirements


This position requires standing for extended periods, in addition to walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling with occasional sitting. Must be capable of heavy lifting and moving parts up to 75 lbs on a consistent basis.


Working Environment


This job will require some overtime hours. Most work is completed in our Winnipeg, MB facility, however, there are times where you will be required to travel to complete roadside repairs in all weather conditions. The noise level in the environment can be excessive and shop staff can be exposed to high temperatures, fumes, and toxic chemicals.


Qualifications

    • Must hold a Journeyman’s Heavy-Duty Mechanic Red Seal
    • Proven experience in a maintenance supervisory role within the Steel Mill service industry
    • Proven experience within the Steel Mill service industry
    • Proven experience of truck and trailer maintenance practices
    • Excellent leadership and communication skills
    • Familiarity with safety regulations and industry standards
    • Proficient in using maintenance management software
    • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications are a plus
    • Possession of valid Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract
    • Knowledge in inventory management
    • Cummins (Onsite) Programming software to diagnose and repair trucks
    • Self-motivator willing to work overtime as required
