Social Programs Supervisor

Job Description

GENERAL:

Under the direction of the Executive Director of the Cariboo Friendship Society and subject to its policies and regulations, the Social Programs Supervisor is responsible for managing, planning, implementing and providing the Society's social and community services. The Social Programs Supervisor will provide direct services to clients as required; coordinate services through referrals; maintaining liaison with community agencies; providing on-going supervision of various programs coordinators and/or staff; reviewing and evaluating on-going services to recommend improvements and changes; and be generally involved in the Society's various programs.

DUTIES:

  • Provide on-going staff supervision, contract deliverables and manage budgets for the Society’s Social Programs:
  • Elders Circle of Care Program
  • Chiwid Transition House
  • PEACE Program
  • Emergency Homeless Shelter
  • Mental Health and Addictions Supported Housing
  • Mental Health and Addictions Services
  • Coordinate the various programs of the Society, such as;
  • Informational, educational, personal growth and awareness workshops, conferences and related activities
  • Planning of Staff Development Days and Wellness Days
  • Participate on Health and Safety Committee
  • Case Management of various agency services and wraparound supports
  • Others as may be identified by the Society
  • Reviewing and evaluating on-going programs and service activities to recommend improvement and changes by:
  • submitting quarterly reports to the Board of Directors and Executive Director.
  • oral reports to the Executive Director during supervisory sessions and/or staff meetings.
  • an annual written evaluation.
  • informal observation and feedback received from users, clients and/or agencies.
  • making recommendations for the purpose of upgrading and improving the Society's services.
  • keeping accurate records of the programs through a filing system, including attendance, participation, costs, references and statistics.
  • Improve client services by:

a) developing programs that meet the needs of the clients in the following areas:

  • social development activities
  • cultural and traditional supports
  • education and training needs
  • case management approaches
  • Wraparound services

b) coordinate volunteers/practicum students which consists of:

  • securing, orientation and training
  • assigning volunteers/practicum students to appropriate programs where needed
  • keeping a record of all volunteers and their activities
  • giving recognition to the Society's volunteers ie: awards, certificates etc.
  • Providing direct services to clients as required by supporting clients as needed and when needed covering such areas as:
  • Provide and demonstrate a welcoming and comfortable approach
  • Provide assistance with CPP, OAS, and SIN, ID application forms
  • Housing referrals and supports
  • interpret for clients or keep an up-to-date list of interpreters
  • provide support/counselling
  • employment counselling/support
  • provide income tax preparation services through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program
  • Coordinating services to clients through referrals by:
  • Support Indigenous population in seeking services in an urban setting (Community Health Representatives, Social Services Workers, Mental Health, and Medical Supports).
  • making referrals as necessary to the appropriate agencies (Ministry of Social Services, Service Canada, Social Assistance, Child Development Centre, Interior Health Services etc.).
  • Maintaining liaison with community agencies by:
  • playing a major role in maintaining good public relations with other community agencies and organizations.
  • keeping abreast of program developments with the various agencies.
  • maintaining a working relationship with those agencies which are essential for the needs of the Society's clients.
  • Participate in various community tables and committees that benefit the agency and client needs (Violence Is Preventable Committee, Interagency Case Assessment Team, Aboriginal Drug Poisoning Response Working Group, Situation Table etc.)
  • To be knowledgeable and involved in the general activities of the Cariboo Friendship Society:
  • This includes involvement through education programs, social events, business training, and fund raising events.
  • In this respect, the employee must be prepared to work from time to time when necessary on evenings and/or weekends.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

1. Requires a working knowledge of the Native community both rural and urban in it's history, cultural and social structure; skills in working with people both on an individual basis and within groups; a good knowledge base of management counselling.

2. A recognized diploma in Social Service training or a social work degree or proven experience in a related field with skills as a social worker, counsellor supervisor and administrator.

3. Requires a mature and professional attitude in dealing with staff, clients, agencies as well as the ability to identify community needs and social problems and to assess issues so as to recommend action.

4. Requires constant contact be maintained with resource persons, agencies and the general public. Good public relations must be maintained through all contacts, unless detrimental to our clients.

REQUIREMENTS AND/OR SKILLS:

1. Should have knowledge and understanding of the local Native culture and/or the ability to work with Indigenous people.

2. Must be able to act under supervision as well as to supervise other staff and volunteers.

3. Knowledge of a local Native language (Shuswap, Chilcotin, Carrier) is an asset.

4. A valid driver’s license and a vehicle are required.

5. Be prepared to travel when requested by the Society for the purpose of training, professional development and/or community outreach.

6. Must maintain professional conduct and abide by the Cariboo Friendship Society's Code of Ethics.

7. Must submit to a criminal records check.
