Job description

Mississauga Community Legal Services is a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide legal advice and representation to low-income residents of the City of Mississauga in various areas of law. We focus our work in the areas of housing and homelessness, immigration law, workers’ rights, income security, violence and health, in conjunction with community development and organizing work to address systemic issues of social exclusion, displacement and poverty.

The clinic is seeking an experienced Staff Lawyer to join our team on a permanent basis.

The candidate will have multiple years of experience in one or all the areas of law including housing, employment and immigration. The individual will represent clients in various Tribunals/Courts, they will offer public legal information sessions to the community, lead and/or support community and law reform initiatives.

The successful candidate will be an important part of the team with a strong commitment towards litigation, community development, and law reform as a means to affect change to improve the lives of Mississauga residents experiencing low incomes. MCLS is seeking and encouraging applications from Black and Indigenous individuals and individuals from diverse, racialized, and marginalized communities and backgrounds who are reflective of our diverse community.

Qualifications Include:

  • At least 4 plus years of experience;
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
  • Proven experience providing access to justice for people living with poverty is required;
  • A self-starter who is able to manage multiple priorities in a high volume service delivery environment;
  • Experience leading or contributing to a law reform or community development initiative;
  • Excellent oral and written advocacy skills;
  • Commitment to social justice and broader poverty law issues;
  • Experience providing services in a community legal clinic setting is highly desirable.

The salary range is $78,729 -$102,723 commensurate with level of experience along with a comprehensive health and dental benefits, four weeks of vacation and a defined pension plan.
