Job Summary
Bring your spatial data expertise to this unique opportunity
GeoBC manages and analyzes geospatial information to create products that help the provincial government better manage natural and human resources in British Columbia. GeoBC provides fundamental geospatial information and related consultation services to the provincial government. GeoBC has four sections: Base Mapping & Remote Sensing, Decision Support, Geospatial Services, and Business Innovation & Emergency Response. This position is with the Base Mapping and Remote Sensing Section.
The Base Mapping & Remote Sensing Section of GeoBC is the foremost authority for core spatial data in the province. GeoBC provides base mapping data for government, industry, academia, and the public. It is responsible for the creation and maintenance of datasets, such as transportation networks, terrain, land cover, and fresh water, that represent foundational geographic information about the province. These layers of information are used for natural resource management, land planning, recreation, environmental monitoring, emergency response, and many other applications.
As a spatial data expert, you develop, maintain, expand, and reconfigure core spatial datasets to meet the internal processes and the business needs of multiple stakeholders. Furthermore, you ensure data integrity by instituting and documenting quality control measures, standardized workflows, and other best practices. Where possible, you develop automation to increase efficiencies, ensure data quality, and make new deliverables possible.
As a Geospatial Analyst, you conduct advanced spatial data analysis as needed, and you bring your client service skills to working with internal clients and the public. You also support your co-workers by openly sharing your expertise and knowledge. You build upon a solid foundation of data management practices, technical lead skills, and a methodical attention to detail to deliver products in a fast-paced team environment.
Job Requirements:
  • Undergraduate Degree or Technical Diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geomatics, Geography, Resource Management, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field (preference may be given to a degree or higher).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in a role predominantly responsible for GIS analysis and mapping.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of work experience supporting clients and/or project teams.
  • Experience delivering complex spatial analysis projects in support of clients' business needs.
  • Experience designing and developing customized spatial applications and preparing recommendations based on natural resource interpretations.
Note: work experience does not include course work and academic project work, but can include co-op or similar work terms that were predominantly GIS work.

Preference may be given to applicants who have experience with one (1) or more of the following:
  • Editing and maintaining large and complex spatial and attribute data sets.
  • Automating or scripting solutions for spatial analyses or repetitive tasks using Python or other programming languages (e.g., JavaScript, FME, SQL, R, etc.).
  • Developing web mapping solutions using various platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Online, Open-Source solutions).
  • Foundational data sets utilized in British Columbia, including data model schemas, operational data editing workflows, quality control procedures, and data publication.
  • Working with municipalities, regional districts, and First Nations on collaborative data projects.
