Job Summary

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for the protection, management and conservation of BC's water, land, air and living resources.
The Environmental Protection Officer (EPO) works in the Environmental Protection Division and protects the environment by providing professional and technical advice to others on the implementation and administration of the Environmental Management Act to manage industrial, municipal, agricultural, point and non-point source wastes and hazardous materials. The EPO conducts source monitoring to study impacts of toxins and wastes, calculates permit fees and facilitates compliance, continuous improvement, and effective management of waste discharges into the environment. This position leads assigned Environmental Protection (EP) planning projects and processes various waste discharge authorizations as part of a sector-based team.
The Division is currently recruiting an EPO to work in the Ministry's Community Liquid Waste Management Team of the Regional Operations Branch. The Community Liquid Waste Management Team operates at a fast pace, on a broad range of issues and initiatives related to municipal liquid waste management, and in a highly collaborative setting. The Environmental Protection files within this sector are technically complex and at times contentious. Our work is founded on Indigenous reconciliation principles and commitments, and we build on a range of partnerships with, Indigenous groups, local governments, provincial agencies, other levels of government and stakeholders.
This role requires an excellent communicator with solid conflict resolution and project management skills. Job Requirements:
  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Management, Applied Science or Natural Sciences, plus three (3) years of related experience.

Related experience must include all of the following:
  • Experience related to Environmental Protection and industrial and municipal waste management, such as:
    • experience with reduction, recycling, treatment and disposal technologies;
    • experience conducting environmental monitoring, assessments and reporting related to waste discharges;
    • experience with environmental planning processes such as Waste Management Planning.
  • Experience using computer software, including word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel) and database management.
  • Experience in working with multiple projects or assignments.
  • Experience in negotiation with staff and clients from a diverse background.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
  • Experience with the regulation of waste discharges into the environment.
  • Experience in liaison with environmental regulatory agencies.
  • Experience with the interpretation and application of the Environmental Management Act, Liquid Waste Management Planning, and the Municipal Wastewater Regulation.
  • Experience in Urban Stormwater Management.
  • Experience engaging with Indigenous Nations.
  • Experience with the interpretation and application of the Local Government Act and Community Charter.
  • Experience working in the municipal liquid waste management sector.

Willingness Statements:
  • Willing and able to travel and meet the transportation requirements of the position (i.e. possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent).
  • Must be physically able to perform field work.
  • Must be willing and able to work occasional evening and weekends to represent the program at public meetings and events.

About this Position:
There are currently two (2) permanent, full time positions available.
These positions can be based in any Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Depending on the successful candidate's location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to five (5) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
