Public Works Department

is seeking

Temporary Full-time Road Maintenance Students to Join the Team!

*Positions available in Zurich, Wroxeter, and Auburn*

Position Summary:

This position requires a person to safely perform and assist other employees with various Road Maintenance and inspection activities.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction and supervision of full time staff, perform various activities such as:
    • Traffic control
    • Grass cutting
    • Tree cutting and removal
    • Sign installation and replacements
    • Placing and leveling soil/gravel
    • Seeding
    • Pothole patching
    • Various inspection activities
  • Safely operate various power tools and equipment.
  • Complete all tasks in compliance with all applicable safety legislation, regulations, guidelines and policies.
  • Student shall provide their own safety shoes, safety vests, work gloves and hard hats and safety eye-wear if prescription is required.
  • Hearing protection and non-prescription safety eye-wear will be provided.
  • Hours may vary. Typically 10 hour days Monday – Thursday. Overtime will be limited and be compensated by Time-Off-in-Lieu (TOIL).

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Pursuing post-secondary diploma or degree in trades or engineering field.
  • Class “G” driver’s licence and a clean driver’s abstract
  • Candidates must be able to provide their own transportation to and from home and the assigned patrol yard and could be assigned to any patrol in Huron County.

Preferred Skills:

  • General computer use skills
    • Current Driver’s Abstract
    • Valid Ontario Drivers Licence, G2 (minimum)

Successful candidates will have to make an appointment for customized hearing protection. Instructions will be given at the time the position is offered.

Competitive Compensation:

  • Starting at $16.86 to $23.85 per hour, as per the 2023 non-union student wage grid; plus an additional $2.00 per hour for environmental factors.
  • Ability to contribute to an OMERS pension plan.
