Summer Technical Assistants

Forest Protection Limited (FPL) invites applications for the position of Summer Technical Assistant who will work closely with Researchers, Superintendents, and Senior Field and Lab technicians, collecting analyzing, and compiling Eastern Spruce Budworm Data. These will be summer positions (May – August 2024) assisting with our research operations. Employees will initially be required to report to, and be based out of, FPL’s head office at the Fredericton Airport for orientation (approximately 1 week) but will be deployed to the Hugh John Fleming Center for most of the work term.


The Summer Technical Assistant is a unique position where individuals will have the opportunity to be involved in field and laboratory roles. Individuals will be expected to participate in both roles, but schedules will be based on interest and applicants should specify in their application if they prefer field or laboratory work.


JOB DUTIES

  • Reporting to the Senior field and lab technician
  • Collecting branch samples in the field during all weather conditions
  • Driving on woods roads
  • Navigating woods roads with GPS or other navigational tools or applications
  • Processing samples in a lab environment
  • Traveling to northern New Brunswick, spending up to ten (10) working days away from normal place of work.
  • Data recording, entry, and validation
  • Maintenance and cleanliness of workplace
  • Other tasks as assigned

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION:

  • Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license, or its equivalent within the province of NB
  • Driver’s abstract
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Functional written & verbal communication in English
  • Must be knowledgeable with Microsoft Excel and proficient with computers.
  • As a condition of employment, applicant must be able to obtain security clearance through the Government of Canada Industrial Security Program and provide a drivers abstract.

IT WOULD BE NICE IF YOU HAD:


  • Related work experience
  • Bilingualism (English and French)
  • Comfort working in remote locations for extended periods of time with poor (or no) cellular reception.
  • Experience driving pickup trucks on logging / dirt roads
  • Special consideration will be given to students enrolled in programs related to the job duties (i.e., forestry, aviation, survey/GIS, or biosciences, etc.), or to those who have related job experience.
